UNITED STATES STAMPED ENVELOPES AND WRAPPERS continued...

1883-1886 Plimpton Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1161 ogc U227a image#U227a, 2c Brown on white, error of color, die 73, size 10, knife 54, wmk. 6, an extraordinarily rare mint entire of this color error, with a most unusual and striking double impression of a hardware anvil printed return corner card at top left (as found on all of the few known examples), very fine; terribly undercataloged in our opinion, as most of the great postal stationery collections sold over the years have lacked a single example (entire or cut square) of this rarity, even the famous Lilly collection did not have an example (UPSS #651A). (Image) 7,500.00

SOLD for $5,000.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1162 og U241 image#U241, 2c Red on amber, mint cut square, 33x38mm, a fresh and very fine example of this elusive cut square. (Image) 900.00

(Image) 2,500.00

SOLD for $2,500.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1164 O U242 image#U242, 2c Red on fawn, 3 1/2 links, a wonderfully choice used example of this cut square rarity, which only exists used (there are no mint cut squares or entires known) and there is only one entire recorded, measuring an impressive 42x41mm, wonderfully fresh, portion of Geneva, Ohio town c.d.s. (the only town this cut square is known to have been used from) and a matching cork postmark, extremely fine; despite this firm having had the pleasure of offering some of the most important postal stationery collections to appear at auction in the last several years (Wampler, the "Michigan" estate, Lyons, Summers and Floyd), this is the first example of Scott #U242 we have ever offered and, in fact, this is the first to appear at public auction in many years; an essential addition to important cut square collection if one ever hopes to attain completion; signed "RAC" (Richard A. Champagne). (Image) 20,000.00

1167 og U248 image#U248, 2c Red on amber, round "O" in "TWO", mint cut square, 30x33m, bright color, very fine; while this cut square is cut a bit small, it is, in fact, the only mint cut square example of this rarity we have ever offered, as the vast majority of these are found used. (Image) 4,250.00

SOLD for $3,000.00

(Image) 1,600.00

SOLD for $800.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1171 og U271 image#U271, 2c Brown on amber, two links below "2", mint cut square, 36x37mm, strong detailed embossing on fresh paper, choice very fine. (Image) 400.00
