1851-1856 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
18 O 5 image#5, 1c Blue, Ty. I, position 7R1E, exceptionally well margined all around, being among the very few in existence whose design is virtually intact (just barely touching at bottom), strikingly intense and luxuriant color in a much deeper shade than typically seen, plus its impression is quite strong on fresh clean paper, wonderfully postmarked with a choice light strike of a circular grid cancel in deep blue, which does not obscure any of the important Type I design characteristics, there is a truly minute corner crease at the very tip of the top right corner that is so insignificant that it is not even mentioned on the accompanying certificate, nor was it even mentioned when sold in the remarkable Louis Grunin collection of 19th century classic stamps, extremely fine. An incredibly handsome and choice example of one of the rarest and most sought-after classic United States stamps. One position, the legendary position 7R1E, provides the philatelic world with the only full Type I design as originally intended, a characteristic no other One Cent imperforate displays. According to the recently published The Wagshal Census of 7R1E by Jerome S. Wagshal, there are only 90 confirmed examples of the imperforate Type I, the vast majority of which are used. When one eliminates those found on cover or in multiples, there are a mere 56 single examples available to collectors. Of this population very few are found with yhe remarkable overall eye appeal that this exciting stamp possesses. In fact, when one takes into consideration the large, well balanced margins of this stamp, its outstanding color and impression, neatness of cancellation and lack of faults that affect the vast majority of known examples, this copy ranks among the very finest available. It is no wonder that this stamp, due to its exceptional quality, has graced the collections of some of the most famous, and most condition conscious, collectors of the 20th century. Wagshal Census #5-CAN-027. Accompanied by a 1977 PF certificate. ex-Grunin, Sheriff, Chanin and Koppersmith. (Image) 45,000.00

SOLD for $37,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
19 O 5A image#5A, 1c Blue, Ty. Ib, position 3R1E, handsome used example of this very rare stamp, featuring huge margins on three sides, including showing a portion of the adjoining stamp at bottom, fourth margin at right just cutting design, distinctive "powder blue" color typical of the plate one early printings, detailed impression showing the Type Ib design characteristics extremely well in the sizable bottom margin, neat portion of large town c.d.s., nearly very fine; 1992 PF certificate. (Image) 6,000.00

SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
20 O 6 image#6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 94R4, an extraordinarily handsome appearing used example of this classic rarity, possessing several outstanding eye-appealing qualities, including four large and incredibly well balanced margins, its color is in a striking intense shade and its impression remarkably detailed on especially bright white paper, only very lightly cancelled so that all of the important design characteristics are easily seen, just a couple of small thin spots that are not at all objectionable, otherwise extremely fine; easily one of the most impressive appearing examples available; the extreme rarity of Type Ia stamps is due to the fact that only 18 of the 20 positions on the bottom row of plate 4 sheets (200 subjects) produced this distinctive type, which shows a full design at bottom; 1994 PF certificate. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $4,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
