780 c imageWorld War II Internee correspondence to/from Hawaii, a total of 46 covers from a Japanese-American family living in Hawaii, the father being interned on Sand Island, Hawaii in the summer of 1942 and then was transferred to the mainland in 1943, most of the covers (34) are the father or other interned family members writing to the mother from various camps including nine from the scarcer Sand Island camp, also Santa Fe (10), Lordsburg (8), Rivers (3), Angel Island, Denson, Newell and Manzanar (1 each), as well as two covers sent to Sand Island but returned to sender, the original letters (in Japanese) also accompany, several of which have translations, some of the letters are on official "Internee of War" envelopes (a few are on "Prisoner of War" envelopes but have "Prisoner" crossed out and "Internee" inserted by hand); ironically, their son was drafted into the army (and killed in action in Italy), and some of his correspondence is also present, including one on a Mutual Telephone Co. illustrated cover, covers in mixed condition as expected on censored mail; a fascinating look into the internee mail system during WWII, and especially interesting with the Hawaii connection.
