I, "Orangeburg Coil", perf. 12 vert., an immensely rare mint pair of one of the most famous rarities in United States philately, possessing 3mm spacing, marvelously fresh, deep luxuriant color and a sharp well-defined impression, while centered slightly to top right, this pair is much better centered and margined than most of the few existing pairs, full o.g., lightly hinged, very fine and quite choice. The Orangeburg Coil is, unquestionably, the rarest of all the Government coils. It was issued in a quantity of 10,000 specifically for the use by Bell Pharmaceutical Co. (in Orangeburg, N.J. - hence its nickname) to mail patent medicine samples to physicians. This new variety went virtually unnoticed by philatelists and the great majority of envelopes that had been franked with this stamp were discarded once opened by the recipients. Had it not been for two very alert philatelists at the time of issuance, the Orangeburg coil may have never been found in mint condition. One, Dr. Jason Samuel Parker, was a well known surgeon, in addition to being a devoted philatelist. He was a recipient of the sample package from the Bell Pharmaceutical Co. and the franking on the cover prompted him to enquire about its status with the company's president. Mr. Bell, in a most courteous response, verified the special status of the stamp and even sent Dr. Parker a mint pair for his collection. Another philatelist at the time, J.R. Hammerle, a railroad mail clerk, noticed this new variety and was able to obtain a mint paste-up strip of four bearing the plate number 5126 directly from the Orangeburg postmaster. The rarity of this coil, even in used condition, is well known - making it one of the most sought-after stamps by serious United States collectors. What is not as well known, however, is the immense rarity of this coil in mint condition. To our knowledge, the entire existing mint population of this stamp comes from three pairs, the paste-up strip of four mentioned above and a strip of five. In recent years the paste-up strip was broken into two pairs, while the strip of five was broken up into two pairs and a single. This has resulted in a total of six normal pairs and one paste-up pair. When one considers that only seven mint pairs exist, there no doubt that this is truly one of the greatest rarities in United States philately and few collectors will ever have the opportunity to own such a prized pair. The pairs once contained within the strips of four and five were all sold privately, so none of these ever made it to the auction block. The last mint pair to make an appearance at auction was the most poorly centered of the existing examples, and it was sold in our October 1998 Collector's Series Sale. Prior to that appearance, it has been many years since the last genuine mint pair was offered at public auction. We suspect that final realization of the pair offered here (which was acquired privately by Mr. Lessin in 1984) will require the Scott Catalogue editors to drastically revise its current catalog value. Accompanied by 1961 and 2002 PF certificates, in addition to a letter dated March 1, 2002 from the American Philatelic Society indicating that they had given this pair a genuine certificate in 1995. ex-A.
