816 og PR98 image#PR98, 60c Pink, wonderfully fresh, strong color in a pastel shade characteristic only to the Bureau issue, crisp impression, attractively centered, full o.g., relatively lightly hinged, very fine for this. An exciting mint example of this enormously rare stamp. This being the only Scott #PR98 we have ever had the pleasure to offer, in addition to being the first to appear at auction in several years. There are some interesting facts which help to validate the extreme rarity of this particular value. After spending literally hours searching through some of the most important auction sales of United States stamps we could find no more than five mint 1894 Sixty Cent Bureau issue Newspapers in any condition - and none were in sound condition with the exception of the example offered here from the Lessin collection. For example, in over the 35+ year history of the annual "Rarities of the World" sales we found exactly one having ever been offered (centered to left, o.g., wrinkle and a tiny facial scuff). The Lilly sale had one, but it was not illustrated and was actually part of a lot (!) containing #PR95-98 described as o.g. with creases. The 1992 "Connoisseur" collection, sold by Superior Galleries, had an example centered to top, with o.g., h.r. and a small corner crease. Additionally, we have had the pleasure in recent years to offer some of the most extensive newspaper stamp selections from such luminary collections as those formed by Eliot Weisman, "Pell Mel", Larry Lyons and William S. Floyd. None of these gentlemen were ever able to acquire an example of this stamp. A key stamp not only to a comprehensive collection of newspaper stamps, but this also ranks as one of the greatest rarities in United States philately. The Lessin example, to our knowledge, is the only truly sound original gum example that exists. Accompanied by a 1994 PF certificate. (Image) 13,500.00

SOLD for $55,000.00

817 ng PR101 image#PR101, $6.00 Pale blue, unused, without gum, extraordinarily well centered within very large margins, lovely characteristic pastel pale blue color and a highly detailed impression, completely free of any of the faults which affect virtually all other known examples, very fine. A magnificent unused example of the 1894 Six Dollar Bureau issue Newspaper - the rarest regularly issued Newspaper stamp. Of the mere 14 examples which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, this is the only existing example that is both sound and well centered. One of the highlights of the entire Joseph E. Lessin Collection. Clearly ranking as one of the rarest stamps in all of United States philately, the opportunity to acquire such an important stamp is an understandably infrequent occasion. In fact, according to our research, there have been only four other examples of a #PR101 offered in over ten years. There was an original gum example, with barely fine centering, offered in the 1990 "Rarities of the World" Sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.); the example offered here from the Lessin collection was sold in the 1992 "Connoisseur" Sale (Superior Galleries); an unused (without gum) straight edged copy with fine centering in the 1993 "Rarities of the World" Sale; a well centered original gum example with a small edge crease and a trivial perforation tip thin sold for a record $52,250.00 (including premium) in our January 2000 sale of the Larry Lyons collection; and finally an original gum example with fine centering, two small thin spots and a trivial corner crease (ex-Lilly) was the last to be offered in our December 2001 sale, where it realized $19,800.00. Accompanied by 1958 and 1992 PF certificates; ex-"Connoisseur" collection. (Image) 50,000.00
