United States Stamps continued...

1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
321 og 292 image#292, $1.00 Trans-Mississippi, a superlative mint example of this popular commemorative, being in a condition that is rivaled by few others, possessing absolutely perfect centering amid the most lavish margins imaginable, just as impressive is this stamp's spectacular overall freshness and brilliance, with superb prooflike color and impression on bright untoned paper, pristine o.g. that has been only very lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem in every regard; a One Dollar Trans-Mississippi for the perfectionist; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 1,250.00

SOLD for $3,500.00
Closing..Mar-08, 04:30 PM
322 nh 293 image#293, $2.00 Trans-Mississippi, mathematically precise centering amid extravagantly large margins which are most uncharacteristic of this value, spectacularly rich color without a hint of the oxidization that affects so many examples, incredibly detailed impression on bright fresh paper, immaculate o.g. without a single gum bend or skip, never hinged, superb. The Two Dollar Trans-Mississippi is widely considered to be, by far, the most challenging commemorative issue of the United States to obtain in extremely fine condition. Its margins are typically very narrow and its centering is almost always quite poor in comparison to other values from the Trans-Mississippi series. Its color often presents a problem as well, as it is prone to becoming darkened in areas due to oxidization. When one tries to find a well centered, large-margined example with fresh unaffected color it becomes quickly apparent what a challenge all collectors face. To then add the desire to acquire a premium quality example that is never hinged as well, one finds that scant few exist, let alone ever offered at auction. We estimate that less than a dozen such extremely fine, never hinged, examples exist (most having been once part of the famous ex-Weill block of ten that has been broken up - and only five from this block are remotely comparable to this stamp). However, none is as perfectly centered, and as large margined, as the spectacular example offered here from the William J. Higgins collection. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a mint Two Dollar Trans-Mississippi in the ultimate never hinged quality desired by all collectors. Accompanied by a 1982 PF certificate. (Image) 4,500.00

SOLD for $22,000.00

324 O 293 image#293, $2.00 Trans-Mississippi, the used example offered here is one of the finest used copies of this scarce and notoriously difficult commemorative we have ever offered, as this stamp possesses several outstanding physical attributes that are rarely encountered, including being extraordinarily well centered amid very large margins, plus its color is incredibly intense, in a shade that is exceptionally deep, razor-sharp impression, neat strike of a desirable Des Moines, Iowa town c.d.s. (rather than the more typically seen registry postmark), extremely fine; a lovely used gem; 2001 PF certificate. (Image) 1,000.00
