1464 c imagePoint Lookout Md., five inbound prisoner cover fronts, all bearing 3c Rose (#65), variety of nice cancels including an 1864 Point of Rocks Md. octagonal, 1865 Parkersburg W.V., 1865 Speights Bridge N.C. fancy cork, 1865 Nashville Ten. fancy cork and 1865 Eastville Va.; when prisoner's letters arrived at the prison, they were openned, examined and the correspondence forwarded to the prisoner when appropriate, cover fronts were removed and filed alphabetically in the prison files, of note is the crayon filing initial placed on each front corresponding to the first letter of the prisoner's last name; generally fine-very fine for this; a fascinating grouping. 1475 Fascinating 1861-62 Texas frontier soldier's diary, leatherbound (100x160mm) with 40 lovely handwritten pages, compiled by James T. Reeves, being the "Journal of his ranging life on the frontier of Texas, 1861", intricate "J.T. Reeves/Caldwell, Tex." eagle and shield owner's handstamp on front cover; a member of the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles, James Reeves has carefully documented many facets of the everyday life of a soldier in his diary that spans December 24, 1861 through February 28, 1862, discussions concerning food, weekend dances, trips to other forts, dalliances with Indians, soldiers drinking and carousing, and personal thoughts concerning the war and specific officers fill these intriguing pages; this regimental unit was recruited and organized under a 12 month enlistment from the counties in central Texas, near San Antonio and Austin, being commissioned to protect the western frontier of Texas, the regiment was disbanded at Fort Mason, (Mason Co.) Texas in late April 1862; light edge wear that by no means distract from this enlightening and significant Texana artifact, very fine and unique; life on the western frontier of Texas during the Civil War was seldom chronicled, with this important diary shedding much light on the events of the times; a magnificent treasure for the serious Civil War or Texas collector. 1478 c imageTexana, Tex. / May 30 (1861) c.d.s. with manuscript date on 3c Star die on buff entire addressed to Grove Hill, Alabama, manuscript "Due 3c" at top, this Jackson County D.P.O. ceased operations in 1885, possibly an overweight letter, however, it certainly reached its destination after U.S. postage became invalid on June 1, 1861, potentially being marked due by a confused Grove Hill PM, light soiling with trivial reduction left, otherwise very fine; an interesting and unusual Confederate use of U.S. postal stationery.
