1263 c 9 image#9, 10c Blue "TEN", three clear to large margins, just cut in at right, brilliant blue color and detailed impression, cancelled by multiple pen strokes on brown homemade cover, manuscript "Flat Pon(d) Ga/July 31" postmark to left, addressed to Dr. E.I. Eldridge, Genl. Woffard's Brigade, Genl. McLaw's Division, Longstreets Corps, Richmond, Va., lengthy 1863 dated enclosure accompanies which speaks to the hardships of the time; fresh from survival at Gettysburg, Mrs. Eldridge worries "that you are going back to Fredericksburg" and that she "never passed such a miserable time as I did when I knew you were Maryland and Penn. It was certainly an unfortunate move invading the enemy's country. I hope Genl. Lee will not do it again.", she also discusses local events and reaction to the war; cover has trivial reduction at left, enclosures and cover are very fine; a truly marvelous postal history item from a Lee County P.O. that was discontinued in 1870, with riveting correspondence that echoes a wife's desperation at having a husband at war. Randle, Acworth, Western & Atlantic Railroad, Georgia, pencil docketing a reverse indicates that stamp is position #62 on plate; written shortly before Sherman began his campaign toward Atlanta in August of 1864, the Western and Atlantic railroad served as the major supply line for both the Confederate and Federal forces in northern Georgia; light wrinkling and small erosion in address, still very fine; a striking "Frame Line" cover with a marvelous strike; 2001 CSA certificate.
