1161 c 118XU1 var. image#118XU1 var., Carolina City, N.C., 5c Black Provisional Handstamped entire (Dietz Ty III), a light doubled but discernible strike, as always, on cover dated January 24 (1862), addressed to Goldston, N.C.; this particular typeset handstamp served as both postmark and rating device, being struck by an improvised holder which accounts for the usual light strikes; accompanied by lengthy dated soldier's enclosure from Camp Vance near Carolina City, interesting contents on camplife and the soldiers' attitudes concerning waiting for battle, trivial reduction left with light edgewear, still very fine and extremely scarce; possibly the Dietz listing copy as the catalog example displays the identical "Jany, 24" date. Branch & Sons, Petersburg (Va.); interesting contents pertaining to writer's request to have some of his commodities moved up the James River "to a safer position" before they are seized by Union forces, he also comments on his perception of Confederate military strategy in the area, "our armies are acting wisely I think in getting away from the Union (gun)boats, and concentrating on a few points"; very fine; a fascinating small town usage with marvelous contents that speak to the hardships of those who lived in harms way. 1178 c 1b image#1b, Dark green, Stone 1 or 2, an attractive horizontal pair with repairs, having been lifted and replaced (a bit lower than original placement), paying the 500 mile rate and tied by blue "Norfolk, Va./Jan 21 186(2)" c.d.s. to orange cover, addressed to Miss Ida Wooten, Loudesbon, Loundes County, Alabama, printed "G. Wooten, Company H, Third Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, Entrenched Camp, near Norfolk, Va." personalized regimental corner card; writing home to probably a daughter, this soldier was camped near Norfolk, Va. where Confederate forces had taken control of and burned the U.S. Navy Yards at the beginning of the war, Norfolk was reoccupied by Union forces several months later on May 10, 1862; cover has repairs to both front and back, still attractive and desirable; a very scarce personalized Confederate military item. 1179 c 1c image#1c, 5c Olive green, Stone A or B, huge to ample margins on three sides, just cut in at left, unusually lightly inked example which shows more vignette detail than most, cancelled by pen strokes with "Patrick CH Va., Feby 12" manuscript postmark to left on petite embossed cover, soldier's endorsement "Col C Turner 7th Feby 1862" addressed to C.Y. Thomas, Member of Senate, Richmond, Va.; as a member of the Virginia State Senate, C.Y. Thomas struggled to prevent the state from seceding from the Union, he openly but quietly avowed his sympathies for the Union while still holding offices and appointments during the war. After the war President Grant appointed Thomas military governor for the State of Virginia; insignificant aging and tear to flap at back, very fine for this. (Image) Est. 200-300
