1861 First Design "August" Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
121 og 57 image#57, 5c Brown "August", a phenomenal quality part original gum example of this very challenging and important rarity, possessing the finest centering of any of the 35 recorded examples of the Five Cent "August", being absolutely perfectly centered top to bottom and side to side, completely free of the flaws which affect so many other existing examples, strikingly intense "August" color and a razor-sharp impression on bright paper, fully intact perforations all around which, again, is a most unusual trait of this value whose brittle paper frequently resulted in short or missing perforations, an extremely fine gem in every regard; a marvelous example of this rarity, whose overall condition is quite remarkable when one considers the following: of the 35 recorded examples, only 16 of these still retain any portion of their original gum, and a mere 5 of these are completely sound; quite likely the finest existing #57 in terms of overall quality, factoring in centering, soundness and presence of original gum; (Image) 14,000.00

Closed or SOLD for $35,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
122 ng 58 image#58, 10c Dark green "August", unused, fabulously well centered within unusually wide margins that are most uncharacteristic of this value, strikingly intense color and a deeply etched impression on fresh paper, tiny perforation tip crease at top right mentioned only for the sake of complete accuracy and is of little importance on this extremely fine gem; rarely encountered with wide margins on all four sides, as these stamps were very narrowly spaced on the plate; one of the finest examples of the Ten Cent "August" we have ever had the pleasure to offer; clear 1984 and updated 1991 PF certificates; ex-"Angel" Collection. (Image) 3,250.00

Closed or SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
123 ng 60 image#60, 24c Dark violet "August", unused, virtually perfectly centered within considerably larger margins than typically encountered, gorgeous rich and distinctive color, exquisitely detailed impression, fully intact perforations all around, extremely fine; an especially rare and desirable stamp in this gem quality; among the finest centered Twenty Four Cent "August" issues known; 1988 and 1991 PF certificates; ex-"Angel" Collection. (Image) 6,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $7,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
124 og 61 image#61, 30c Red orange "August", full original gum, virtually perfect centering amid lavishly large margins which are almost never encountered on this immensely rare stamp, as most are found with their perforations cutting the design on one side (typically at left or right due to the narrow spacing on the plate), spectacular eye-arresting color in a very deep shade, fully intact perforations all around, barest trace of a diagonal crease at top right that is so negligible that it was never even mentioned when sold in many past auction descriptions, extremely fine. There are only 28 certified examples of Scott #61 found in the Philatelic Foundation records, plus there is an additional uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. One common characteristic of the Thirty Cent value is the presence of creasing due to the brittle nature of the paper. In many cases this creasing can be severe and is an accepted condition factor for serious collectors attempting to assemble a set of "August" issues. In the instance of the magnificent example offered here, the "creasing" is truly insignificant and barely perceptible, placing this stamp among the finest in existence. In fact, we believe this copy is one of the five best centered Thirty Cent "August" issues still retaining its original gum. Accompanied by 1949 and 1988 PF certificates; ex-Lilly, Seymour and "Concord" Collection. (Image) 17,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $19,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
125 ng 62 image#62, 90c Dull blue "August", unused, flawlessly centered within exceptionally wide and well balanced margins, stunning prooflike color and impression on bright fresh paper, fully intact and even perforations all around, an extremely fine gem in every regard. A review of the Philatelic Foundation records indicates that they have certified only 20 stamps as genuine examples of #62. There is an additional uncertified copy housed in the New York Public Library collection, presumably never to be made available to the collecting public. Of the 20 certified examples, only eight are sound and the majority of these are found without gum, as is this stamp. An exciting example of this important U.S. rarity in the finest condition attainable. Accompanied by a 1983 PF certificate; ex-Caspary (where it was the finer of his two examples) and "Concord" Collection. (Image) 22,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $55,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
126 og 62a image#62a, 90c Blue "August", imperforate, horizontal pair, full to large margins all around, unused, without gum as always the case, rich characteristic color and a sharp impression, extremely fine; in our opinion much undercataloged, as pairs of this stamp are rarely offered, and especially so in this quality; 1951 and 1994 PF certificates. (Image) 5,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
127 O 62B image#62B, 10c Dark green "August", a remarkable quality used horizontal pair of exceptional beauty and rarity, with both stamps being incredibly well centered and margined, which is a most uncommon occurrence on this difficult issue, gorgeous rich color and a deeply etched impression on bright paper, perfectly cancelled with two light strikes of a fancy San Francisco cogwheel postmark, extremely fine; any single #62B with its perforations clearing the design on all four sides is a true condition rarity, to find a pair containing two gem examples is most extraordinary; 1990 PF certificate. (Image) 2,000.00

Closed or SOLD for $3,350.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
