I and II combination block of four, positions 37-38/47-48L12, unused, the top left and bottom right stamps being Type I stamps (the latter showing a double transfer), other two are Type II stamps, magnificently centered, with each stamp in the block featuring uncharacteristically large and well balanced margins, bright color and an unusually clean impression for Plate 12, top left stamp with trivial inclusion speck not mentioned on the accompanying certificate, an extremely fine and very rare One Cent Blue Plate 12 multiple; 1990 PF certificate. 63 ogbl 19, 19b, 22 image#19, 19b, 22, 1c Blue, Ty. IIIa/IIIa/Ia/Ic combination block of four, positions 85-86/95-96R4, a brilliantly fresh mint bottom sheet-margin block of four, the top stamps being Type IIIa, while the bottom left stamp is the enormously rare Type Ia, and the bottom right stamp is Type Ic, incredibly intense color and a truly prooflike impression on pristine paper, full clean o.g. that has been lightly hinged, minor perf. strengthening in selvage, bottom right stamp with two insignificant tone specks, very fine. An impressive and exceedingly rare combination block, containing a choice example of one of the rarest mint stamps in all of United States philately - the One Cent Blue 1857 Type Ia. In fact, we believe the mint Type Ia contained in this block is one of the finest quality original gum examples known among the scant few recorded, as this stamp could not be more brilliantly fresh and crisp, nor its original gum more pristine. An exciting showpiece either for the One Cent 1857 issue specialist, or for the collector of mint United States stamps wishing to obtain a mint example of one of the most challenging U.S. stamps. Accompanied by a 1993 PF certificate; ex-Caspary, Lilly and Ishikawa. (Image) 50,000.00

64 O 20 image#20, 1c Blue, Ty. II, right sheet-margin used single, possessing virtually perfect centering which is almost unheard of on this difficult type, additionally this wonderful stamp's color is luxuriously rich and its impression razor-sharp on fresh paper, very light and unobtrusive town c.d.s., an extremely fine used gem for the finest collection; 1990 PF certificate. 65 ng 21 image#21, 1c Blue, Ty. III, unused, flawlessly centered amid enormously large margins that are unlike any other we have ever seen on this very rare stamp, plus its color is incredibly intense and its impression is especially detailed on bright fresh paper, showing a clear break in the top label, and a huge break at bottom, unusually even and intact perforations for a perf. 15 issue, just the faintest trace of perf. tip toning at top that is truly unworthy of mention when one considers this stamp's overall attributes, extremely fine gem; easily the finest centered and margined unused/mint One Cent perforated Type III in existence; 1989 PF certificate; ex-"Angel" (where it realized $8,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, Christie's October 29, 1991). 66 og 22 image#22, 1c Blue, Ty. IIIa, magnificently well centered, with uncharacteristically large and well balanced margins all around, brilliantly fresh and crisp overall, lovely rich color and a sharp impression, pristine full o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine gem; an exceptional original gum One Cent perforated Type IIIa; easily one of the finest mint examples we have ever offered; 1990 PSE certificate. 67 og 23 image#23, 1c Blue, Ty. IV, an extraordinary quality mint example of a stamp that is widely recognized as one of the rarest and most challenging stamps of the 19th century to find in any kind of acceptable quality, as this stamp is notorious for being found poorly centered used, let alone in mint condition, possessing essentially perfect centering amid much larger margins than usual, gorgeous rich color and a razor-impression, accompanying certificates call the extent of its original gum as "slight" which, in our opinion is conservative, as nearly 40% of the reverse has gum, extremely fine; a rarity mint in any condition, as evidenced by the lack of a single mint example in most of the great collections sold in recent years (Golin, Zoellner, Lyons); however, the only comparable quality mint single was sold by this firm in our May 8, 1998 sale of the Eliot H. Weisman collection, his #23 possessed similarly choice centering and its o.g. was described as "large part o.g." on its accompanying certificate, the Weisman example realized an impressive $17,050.00; 1968 and 1991 PF certificates. (Image) 7,250.00

Closed or SOLD for $10,000.00

68 O 23 var. image#23 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut once at top and once at bottom, incredibly well centered for this difficult stamp, intensely rich color and impression on bright paper, crisp strike of "New-York/Nov. 5" circular datestamp, extremely fine; a true condition rarity in this gem quality; 2000 and 2001 PF certificates. (Image) 650.00

Closed or SOLD for $550.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
69 O 23 var. image#23 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut once at top, marvelously well centered within uncommonly large margins, especially bright color and impression on immaculate paper, central "Philadelphia/May 7, 1860" year date c.d.s., extremely fine; two 2000 PF certificates. (Image) 660.00

Closed or SOLD for $600.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
70 O 23 var. image#23 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut once at top and twice at bottom, position 46R1L, flawless centering that is almost impossible to find on this, plus its color and impression are unusually strong, and not weak and washed out as so often encountered, interesting grid cancel, an extremely fine gem for the finest collection; 1990 APS and 2000 PF certificates. (Image) 675.00

Closed or SOLD for $475.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
71 O 23 var. image#23 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut once at top and twice at bottom, position 45R1L, wonderfully well centered, deep luxuriant color and impression on bright paper, central "Philadelphia/Aug 15" c.d.s., extremely fine; 1998 APS certificate. (Image) 675.00

Closed or SOLD for $675.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
72 O 23 var. image#23 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut once at bottom, position 5R1L, incredibly well centered, gorgeous color and impression which also shows a double transfer, neat face-free cancel confined to top, extremely fine gem; a superb example of one of the scarcest of all the recut varieties, as only four stamps on the plate were recut in this manner; 1999 and 2000 PF certificates. (Image) 725.00

Closed or SOLD for $950.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
73 O 23 var. image#23 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, recut once at top and twice at bottom, position 52L1L, a gem example of this truly rare double recut position, magnificently centered and margined for this tightly spaced issue, intense color and impression on bright paper, light grid cancel, extremely fine; the recut twice at both top and bottom variety is the most elusive and most desirable of all the recut stamps, as only two positions out of the entire plate of 200 of Plate One Late are found this way; terribly undercataloged in our opinion, as the Scott catalog lists the recut once at top and bottom positions (113 positions on the sheet) at $650.00, while the recut twice at both top and bottom variety (only two positions on the plate) is given only a 23% premium, despite it being over 50 times as rare; 1996 PF certificate; ex-Lyons. (Image) 800.00

Closed or SOLD for $1,900.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
74 og 24 image#24, 1c Blue, Ty. V, horizontal pair, brilliantly fresh, bright color, extraordinarily well centered and margined, full o.g., lightly hinged, right stamp with faint corner crease not mentioned on accompanying certificate, extremely fine; clear 1990 PF certificate. (Image) 375.00

Closed or SOLD for $350.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
75 O 24 var. image#24 var., 1c Blue, Ty. Va, gem used example of this surprisingly elusive type, possessing all of the classic characteristics unique to this type, with fabulously intense color and a great impression showing the nearly complete side ornaments, wonderfully well centered within huge margins only seen on plate 5 stamps, New York town c.d.s., extremely fine; terribly undercataloged in our opinion for a "normal" very fine stamp, let alone in this outstanding quality; 1992 PF certificate. (Image) 120.00

Closed or SOLD for $525.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
76 og 25 image#25, 3c Rose, Ty. I, a remarkable mint example of this terribly difficult and rare stamp, possessing nearly flawless centering for this, with deep luxuriant color and an excellent clarity of impression seldom seen, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; the rarity of this stamp in this outstanding quality cannot be overstated, as the Type I plate simply did not leave enough room for perforating stamps without the perforations impinging the design nearly all around, any example which shows all four frame lines is exceedingly rare, and such well centered examples that are also sound and possess original gum are next to impossible to find; 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 2,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
77 nh 26 image#26, 3c Dull red, Ty. II, pristine top left corner sheet-margin mint single, possessing an overall "post office" freshness, with gorgeous color and impression on immaculate paper, outstanding centering and margins, unblemished o.g., never hinged (l.h. in selvage only), extremely fine; an impressive stamp; 1987 PF certificate. (Image) for hinged 75.00

Closed or SOLD for $210.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
78 nh 26 var. image#26 var., 3c Claret, "post office" fresh top sheet-margin mint single of this distinctive and undervalued shade, with rich unmistakable claret color on fresh crisp paper, outstanding centering, o.g., never hinged, extremely fine and striking; 1998 PF certificate specifically identifying this as the claret shade. (Image) for hinged 170.00

Closed or SOLD for $625.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
79 og 26a image#26a, 3c Dull red, Ty. IIa, essentially perfect centering within unusually large margins, sumptuously rich color, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; a gem example of this truly scarce and impossibly difficult stamp; 1994 PF certificate. (Image) 200.00

Closed or SOLD for $1,200.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
80 c 26af image#26af, 3c Dull red, Ty. IIa, imperforate vertically, an impressive horizontal strip of three nicely tied to an attractive cover to St. Louis by two strikes of large black "Paid" grids and a red "Boston, Ms./Apr 20, 1859" c.d.s., sealed tear in left stamp, cover with repaired backflap and minor edge tears, very fine appearance; the unique listing example added to the Scott catalog just within the past few years after this cover made its first appearance at auction in years in 1997 (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc. "Rarities" sale), there is one other Type IIa imperforate vertically stamp known (ex-Piller collection), however it is only a single and, of course, having a multiple such as this is a more desirable format to display the perforation error; its $8,250.00 realization in 1997 is the basis for its current catalog value; a highly desirable cover for either the 1851-57 Issue specialist or for the serious collector of classic United States errors; 1950 (photocopy) and 1997 PF certificates. (Image) 8,250.00

Closed or SOLD for $13,000.00
