1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
335 og 192 image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, a most impressive example of this tremendously rare stamp, featuring outstanding centering amid extraordinarily large margins which are quite uncharacteristic of this value, sumptuously rich color on fresh paper, small thin spots which do not detract from this stamp's extremely fine appearance; there are probably no more than 30 to 40 copies of this stamp still in existence, the vast majority of which possess rather poor centering and often with faults, the example offered here is probably among no more than a half dozen examples which can be classified with very fine or better centering, nearly all of which have varying degrees of faults; one of the finest centered and margined One Cent Soft Paper Special Printings in existence; 1987 and 1998 PF certificates; ex-Lutwak and Zoellner. (Image) 22,500.00

337 og 194 image#194, 3c Blue green special printing, without gum as issued, incredibly fresh, with eye-arresting intensely rich color and a highly detailed impression on bright clean paper, centered a bit to right as are several of the known examples, completely free of any flaws which affect most surviving copies, very fine. A magnificent example of one of the rarest and most difficult of all Bank Note Special Printings, with perhaps fewer than 20 still believed to exist (only 12 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation). This particular example may very well be among the top two or three in terms of its overall quality. It is interesting to note that virtually every time one encounters a great collection of United States stamps, the one stamp that is missing out of all the Special Printings is the Three Cent Soft Paper Bank Note. It is typically one of the last acquisitions made to complete the series, as was the case with this very stamp when Larry Lyons acquired it out of the Zoellner sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., October 1998), thus filling in his last spot in his set of Special Printings. Mr. Floyd, equally aware of this stamp's rarity, had been patiently waiting to acquire an example in the quality that would be commensurate with the rest of his magnificent set. His Special Printings were completed with his purchase of this stamp when it was sold in our auction of the Larry Lyons collection in January 2000 for $40,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. Now a new collector will have the opportunity to own a superlative example of one of the rarest stamps in all of U.S. philately. Accompanied by 1948 and 1998 PF certificates; ex-Zoellner and Lyons. (Image) 32,500.00

Stern and accompanied by 1971 APS, 1976 and 1978 PF certificates; ex-Lutwak and Zoellner. (Image) 17,000.00

339 og 196 image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, a marvelous example of this very scarce stamp, possessing margins of impressive size and being wonderfully well centered within them, gloriously rich color, fully intact and uniformly even perforations, an extremely fine gem; it is doubtful that there are many other examples which can compare in quality to this exceptional stamp; 1973 and 1992 PF certificates, as well as a 1992 PSE certificate. (Image) 3,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $5,750.00
