104 c 78c image#78c, 24c Blackish violet, a single with fine centering and rich unmistakable Blackish violet color, tied to an absolutely gorgeous canary-colored illustrated advertising cover for "Barnum, Fenner & Co./Agricultural Implements" by black target postmark, matching clear "St. Louis, Mo. Oct (?)" c.d.s. along side, addressed to Lincoln, England, red transit c.d.s. and backstamped, cover with two minute and inconsequential tears at top, a very fine and lovely cover franked with the enormously rare and undercataloged Blackish violet shade, which is one of the rarest and most difficult stamps of the entire 19th century to find in any condition off cover, let alone on this beautiful advertising cover; the Scott catalog only lists and prices this stamp used off cover at $1,750.00, and this evaluation is terribly low considering its true rarity; the penultimate #78c cover; illustrated in Lester G. Brookman's The United States Postage Stamps of the 19th Century, Volume II (figure 88, page 58); signed Stanley B. Ashbrook. (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000
