Antarctic Expd./MR 4 09" c.d.s.; in 1908 a quantity of the 1p Rose carmine stamp of New Zealand was overprinted "King Edward VII Land" and taken on the Shackleton expedition to the Antarctic, due to weather conditions the expedition never reached its destination and landed at Victoria Land instead, the stamps were used aboard the expedition ship, Nimrod, and at the Cape Royds base in McMurdo Sound; while cancelled this is a n.h. item as it was sold to the public at a premium, upper left stamp has trivial crease, very fine (S.G. #A1; £210+).
