103 c 26, 15L14 imageOLD STAMPS/NOT RECOGNIZED, a superb strike of this rare and highly prized marking, tying both a 3c Dull red, Ty. II (#26) and a (1c) Bronze on lilac Blood's Penny Post Philadelphia local post (#1514) to a remarkably handsome cover to Fly Mountain, Ulster County, New York, beautiful matching strike of "Philadelphia, Pa./Sep 14/1861" c.d.s. at top right, plus there is a Blood's double circle postmark just below, bold strike of "DUE 3" handstamp at bottom left, couple of light and unobtrusive horizontal bends, one of which passes through stamps but affects very little and is of little importance on this extraordinary and extremely fine cover. The Philadelphia "Old Stamps/Not Recognized" handstamp is one of the most desirable and sought-after markings of the entire Civil War era. Typically they exist simply franked only with the demonitized 3c Dull red and, often times the marking is not terribly well struck. What is so remarkable about the cover offered here is, not only how superbly the marking is struck, but that the cover was additionally franked with the Philadelphia Blood's local post stamp. There are only two such "Old Stamps/Not Recognized" covers in existence that bear such a combination of stamps. The other recorded cover is quite tatty and, most importantly, the local post stamp is not tied like this extraordinary example. A remarkable postal history rarity which, in our opinion, ranks as the most spectacular of all "Old Stamps/Not Recognized" usages in existence. A showpiece for any gold medal exhibit, whether it be for an 1857-61 Issue collection, a Civil War exhibit, or for the local post specialist; ex-Kaplan, Malcolm; 1980 PF certificate.
