The ìmassacre, which led Corwine, US consul at Panama, to suggest direct American military intervention, is better known as "The Watermelon War". In reality, it was a riot between American workers and Panamanians (whose potential jobs they had taken), sparked by a dispute between an American and a Panamanian watermelon vendor.
