In the letter the writer gives a description of the battle as a participant: "...further I let you know that we got orders to march for harpers ferry on the night of the 15th. Six miles up the river we came to the ferry at midnight. In the morning we got orders that the rebels were advancing on harpers ferry. We marched up to bolivars heights a bout 9 oclock. The firing commenced and lasted till 2 oclock. There was one of the hardest battles that have been fought yet and we wer onley between six or seven hundred of us and we drove them back about 3 miles. The rebel loss was two hundred killed and wounded while our loss was 4 killed and several wounded...we captured one 32 pounder and took 4 prisoners..."
