HAWAII
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
344 O 1 1, 2c Blue Missionary, four large margins that are so wide they capture portions of the adjoining stamps frame lines at right and left, beautiful color and an excellent clarity
of impression, large grid of squares cancel, a tiny piece of top#1, 2c Blue "Missionary", four large margins that are so wide they capture portions of the adjoining stamp's frame lines at right and left, beautiful color and an excellent clarity of impression, large grid of squares cancel, a tiny piece of top was torn off and has been expertly replaced, extremely fine appearance. There are only fifteen recorded examples of the Two Cent Missionary, including one unused and one on cover. However, five are currently held by museums, making a total of eight used copies available to collectors. All eight of these are repaired to some degree, in fact the Scott catalog specifically notes its values for all Missionary stamps are for repaired examples. The stamp offered here has the smallest and most unobtrusive repair of the eight, as most have margins added and/or portions of the design painted in. The Collier copy also possesses the largest margins of any Two Cent Missionary extant. It is for these reasons, as well as for its outstanding overall freshness, that this is considered to be the finest Two Cent Missionary available and has resided in some of the most important Hawaii collections ever formed. It was first discovered by Ezra Cole in 1935. He sold it to the Burger Brothers for $4,500.00. They in turn sold it to legendary stamp collector Alfred Caspary. After the Caspary sale, it was acquired by Alfred Ostheimer III, and later made its way into the Honolulu Advertiser and Twigg-Smith collections.Given the extraordinary condition and rarity, this is not only one of the most valuable items in all of Hawaiian philately, it is also easily recognizable by both seasoned and novice stamp collectors as one of the premier philatelic icons in all of the world. Accompanied by a 1995 PF certificate; ex-Caspary, Ostheimer, Honolulu Advertiser and Twigg-Smith. (Image) $250,000.00

However only about ten used copies exist without repairs or major defects, including the stamp offered here. This is one of the most attractive examples among this elite group. When this stamp was last offered in the 2007 Twigg-Smith sale, bidding was so intense that Mr. Collier had to pay $85,000.00, plus the 15% buyer's premium. One of the most desirable Five Cent Missionaries available to collectors. Most of these are repaired to some degree. In fact, there are only two examples that can be considered sound. The Collier example is by far the finer of these two. Thus, this not only ranks as the finest quality Hawaii #4 extant, it is also one of the very few completely sound and very fine Hawaiian Missionaries of any denomination in existence. It should be noted that the Scott catalog value is specifically for a copy that has been repaired, with examples like this commanding well in excess of their catalog value. An important condition rarity for the collector assembling a Hawaii collection in the finest quality possible.
