examples, of the seven recorded examples of the Scott UO24 entire, o#UO24, UPSS #WD15, 6c Dark red War Dept. on cream, die WD4, size 21, knife 98, wmk. 2, used entire, an immensely rare example, whose number known is even more scant than mint examples, of the seven recorded examples of the Scott #UO24 entire, only three are used, neatly cancelled with "Washington, D.C./Jul 18" c.d.s. and matching circular grid, addressed to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and docketed as received on July 24, 1873, confirming this as the earliest recorded usage of any War Department Entire, wonderfully fresh and clean, very fine; the disparity in the Scott catalog values for mint entires ($11,000.00) versus used entires ($2,000.00), given that the used examples are even more rare than mint, cannot be explained, therefore with the appearance of this important entire at auction this may well result in a significant revision in the Scott catalog value for used in the next edition.
