(20.11) and "16/cents" rate h.s., both in red, and with "5/n. york am pkt" c.d.s. (4.12) alongside the franking; one 2d. defective though a rare and impressive franking. R.P.S. Certificate (2006). Sc. 7, 12, 14d; S.G. 8, 36, 41. provenance: John White, 1982 John Woolfe, October 2006 Note: 1/5d. was the correct weight for a ¼oz. letter via Marseilles and the U.K. to U.S.A. The above letter obviously weighed over ¼oz. and under ½oz., so eventually was sent via Southampton and this is confirmed by the 20 November date of arrival, the via Marseilles date of arrival being 12/13 November. The ½oz. rate to U.S.A. was made up from 6d. to the U.K. plus 8d. for ½oz, i.e. 1/2d. As 1/5d. had been paid no extra payment was due and it was sent with the change of route. Sc. 8 S.G. 10. provenance: Chalo2d. blue on soft paper, from the foot of the sheet showing sharp overlap impression in the margin, clear to large margins nearly all round elsewhere, crisply cancelled with superb "12"; most attractive. Sc. 8; S.G. 10. provenance: "Chalon", November 1968 Note: The white wove paper was supplied in foolscap-size sheets with each sheet being folded once so that, when opened out, the sheet was double foolscap size. The double foolscap size was sufficient for the printing of fifteen horizontal rows of the sheet which meant that only a portion of the plate could be used. In order to overcome this problem a further sheet was required for the printing of the remaining five rows. The paper was therefore carefully overlayed to cover the entire plate resulting in "overlaps". In some cases one row was printed on two pieces of paper. (Image) Est. $150-200
