A very rare stamp on cover. Holcombe Opinion (1993) states that "The stamp has two oval bar cancellations, apparently without numerals. The first partial strike is extremely smudgy and appears to have been partially cleaned off rubbing the surface of the stamp in places. The second strike is complete but the numeral which should be "18" does not show". Sc. 6; S.G. 6. A remarkable franking clearly demonstrating the overlap impression. B.P.A. Certificate (1991). provenance: H. Gordon Kaye, April 1991 Note: The blue wove paper was supplied in foolscap-size sheets with each sheet being folded once so that, when opened out, the sheet was double foolscap size. The double foolscap-size was sufficient for the printing of fifteen horizontal rows of the sheet which meant that only a portion of the plate could be used. In order to overcome this problem a further sheet was required for the printing of the remaining five rows. The paper was therefore carefully overlayed to cover the entire plate resulting in "overlaps". In some cases one row was printed on two pieces of paper (Image) Est. $2,000-3,000

The most famous of all New Zealand stamps and one of the great philatelic rarities of the world. R.P.S. Certificate (1941). provenance: Robson Lowe, 1941 London Stamp Exchange, 1970 Gerald Ellott, 1970 Notes: This famous stamp, together with the only other recorded example, now residing in the Tapling Collection in the British Library, has been the subject of intense study over the years. In particular much discussion has taken place over who actually printed the stamp. Earlier research suggested that the stamp was printed by John Davies and the R.P.S. certificate that accompanies this stamp confirms the thinking at that time. In more recent times evidence has suggested that the stamps were printed by John Richardson. The paper used by both printers has the same Large Star watermark as supplied by Perkins, Bacon & Co. Ltd.Both the stamp offered above and the Tapling example are in an identical shade and bear similar New South Wales cancellations. Scientific comparison of the two stamps has been made and expert opinion is held that the two stamps may well have once been used on the same cover. Used together they would have paid the correct postage rate for letters to New South Wales, which was fixed at 2d. for each ½oz. on 1 April 1851. How the variety occurred is open to interpretation with current thinking suggesting that this was due to an interruption during the printing process. In 1971 Robson Lowe published a monograph by Grace Gordon Kaye, compiled from two articles that had appeared in "The Philatelist" early that year. In it she suggests that the two stamps are from Row 15 and are stamps 1 and 2 from that row. Both stamps have recently been extensively studied together at the British Library by Joseph Hackmey, David Beech and Gavin Fryer, and an article by Gavin Fryer is currently in the process of being finalized.literature: "The Philatelist", July 1971 (Image) Est. $180,000-220,000
