"Franz Josef Land" 1894-95 cover and original letter enclosure, letter written and autographed by Dr. Reginald Koettlitz, surgeon and botanist, while on board the
S.Y. Windward on August 25, 1894, and then further added to on April 6, 1895 before mailing (this time headed "Cape Flora, Franz Joseph Land"), marvelous contents, with original mailing envelope addressed to a H. Dowdeswell in England,
franked solely by the photographic vignette of the ship and bears the bold violet "Franz Joseph Land." straight line handstamp across center of cover, privately carried outside of the mails, even the post script in the accompanying letter
states "Please preserve stamp of attached/it will be valuable," cover with edge faults and soiling, nevertheless an extremely rare and desirable artifact of the expedition that rescued Nansen. (Image) |
