1399 ng 28 28, 1874 2s Yellow, syllabic 1, on native wove paper, an incredibly rare unused example, bright color, typical perforations for the native wove paper issues, fine. The 1874
Two Sen on native paper comes in both syllabic 1 and syllabic 16. Howe#28, 1874 2s Yellow, syllabic 1, on native wove paper, an incredibly rare unused example, bright color, typical perforations for the native wove paper issues, fine. The 1874 Two Sen on native paper comes in both syllabic 1 and syllabic 16. However, nearly every unused example is from syllabic 16, with syllabic 1 nearly always found in used condition. This is due to the fact that syllabic 1 was actually issued for postal purposes and was used up within about a month. After supplies were quickly exhausted, it was replaced by the 2s on foreign wove paper (Scott #34). Syllabic 16 was never issued to the public, and was later sold as remainders to stamp dealers. There are currently no more than a dozen recorded examples, the majority having faults to some degree. Thus, this is one of the rarest classic stamps in Japan and one of the highest cataloging items in the Japanese Stamp Specialized Catalog, with the current catalog value being in excess of the equivalent of US$50,000.00. This is the first example we have had the pleasure to offer and we can find no other copy offered in this country in decades. An important rarity for the collector of 19th century Japan or for the connoisseur of worldwide rarities. Accompanied by a 2008 PF certificate. (Image) JSSC 4,800,000Y
