adhesives for the return trip to Germany, plus two uncancelled German aSieger #454E var., 1937 First North American Crash Flight of the "Hindenburg" for the return flight, prepared registered cover from Flushing, New York with five United States adhesives for the return trip to Germany, plus two uncancelled German air mails for return to the United States by the next Zeppelin flight, due to the crash of the "Hindenburg" Zeppelin service was halted and the scheduled mail, like this example, were returned to the sender, but unlike most such items this one received a "Return to Sender" label from the New York Post Office, Foreign Section at the Morgan Annex with four line green handstamp "Zeppelin Disaster/Lakewood, N.J. 5-6-'37/Service suspended/indefinately", plus additional "See Washington bulletin/#17163 - April 14, 1937" in manuscript, initialed by postal employees and postmarked on May 6, 1937, the day of the crash (which was at 7:25p.m.), Flushing bkst. of May 7th, very fine; the fast processing of this item after the crash may be the cause for the mistake "Lakewood" instead of "Lakehurst " in the cachet, extremely rare and only the second example that we have seen handled in this fashion.
