2047 c Correos de la ChimbaBolivia negative blue ship illustrated handstamp, Department of Litoral, an unusually well struck example of this marking illustrating a ship, on 1877 cover to Lausanne, Switzerland, furthermore, a variety of services w"Correos de la Chimba/Bolivia" negative blue ship illustrated handstamp, Department of Litoral, an unusually well struck example of this marking illustrating a ship, on 1877 cover to Lausanne, Switzerland, furthermore, a variety of services was required to get it there, possesses two strikes of a matching "Franca" straight line handstamp, transported to Callao, Peru where turned over to the British post office with small "Callao/SP 21 77" c.d.s. on the reverse, by British ship to Panama receiving the three line transit of Panama and then turned over to a French packet with red "Panama/Paq Fr A no.2/Oct. 1 77" octagonal c.d.s., backstamped, edge wear to the cover at right causing a couple of edge tears and the ship marking barely affected by wrinkles, a fine and extremely rare destination; it is very likely that this is one of no more than two or three covers of this period to Switzerland, as most of the little mail that went to Europe was to France or Great Britain; a wonderful combination of the Bolivian post office and British postal agency as well as the unusual usage of a French packet. Callao #Z37, Z46) tied by somewhat indistinct "C38" numeral in oval of bars establishing that this entered the British post office at Callao, Peru, other Bolivian markings include two strikes of ornate blue "Cancelado" handstamp, London transit, backstamped, stamps with a trace of perf. tip toning, tissue paper cover has small edge flaws including a corner tear at bottom right, fine and incredibly attractive; British stamps were not generally available at Antofagasta but apparently several parties had stamps for their foreign postings thus making this exceptionally rare combination cover of the Bolivian post office there and the British Agency at Callao, Peru; 1969 RPS certificate. 2054 c Correos de la ChimbaBolivia negative black ship illustrated handstamp, Department of Litoral, a marvelous strike of this ship cancel in black which is far rarer than the blue, on an amazing 1875 combination cover with the British Postal Agen"Correos de la Chimba/Bolivia" negative black ship illustrated handstamp, Department of Litoral, a marvelous strike of this ship cancel in black which is far rarer than the blue, on an amazing 1875 combination cover with the British Postal Agency in Bolivia to France, other Bolivian markings of the La Chimba (Antofagast) post office include an equally well struck ornate "Cancelado" oval and boxed "Franca", turned over to the British Post office in Lamar with clear "Cobija/C/JY 22 75" c.d.s. and franked with Great Britain 2p Blue, plate 13 and 1/- Green, plate 10 (S.G. #Z2 var., Z10; only plate 14 is listed for the 2p and even it is not priced), indistinctly cancelled by what is presumed to be light "C39" cancels of the Cobija British post office, the 1/- value is also tied by the French Calais entry transit, red London transit and red "PD" are also on the front, backstamped Paris; choice very fine; of all the British Postal Agency offices Cobija in Bolivia is among the rarest, very few covers are known with Great Britain adhesives used out of this office, and even covers originating out of Bolivia with Great Britain stamps often enter the British postal system at Callao, Peru or some other British office; this cover is the epitome of a combination cover of the Bolivian and British post offices, not only is it of the greatest rarity but it is probably the finest and most beautiful example of this usage with marvelously clear markings and colors all on the front; this cover was featured as the color frontispiece in the famous Glassco Collection of British Post Offices Abroad; signed A. D(iena) and accompanied by a 1972 RPS certificate; ex-Glassco. (Image) Est. $10,000-15,000

Department of Litoral, a pair of 1876 covers from the same correspondence posted directly at the British post office in Bolivia with Great Britain franking, one with 6p Grey, plate 14 and wing-margin 1/- Green, plate 10 (S.G. #Z8, Z10; edge fault to to the wing margin) tied by "C39" numeral in oval of bars with "Cobija/C/JY 20 76" British c.d.s. beside, the other with a rather attractive 1/-Green vertical strip of three, plate 10 (S.G. #Z10) tied by two bold strikes of the "C39" cancel of this office, the two covers were posted in the same manner to Guilford, England arriving about two weeks apart in August of that year, both marked "via Panama/pe. W. I. Mail/to Southampton" and backstamped, both also have had a piece with the stamps cut from the cover and rejoined with hinges, the Cobija cancel is included on the piece with the stamps, despite the condition these two covers are of the greatest rarity being two of only a handful of covers known from this British post office in Bolivia at Cobija with Great Britain stamps.
