40460   imageCrimea. 1855 cover from the "Miss Sleigh, Tunbridge Wells" correspondence endorsed 'Via Marseilles', franked by 1855 1d red-brown, Die II, Alphabet II, wmk. Large Crown, lettered CB, used in combination with 1841 2d blue pl.4 lettered QK, small natural paper flaw on 'A' of 'Postage', cancelled by bold strike of the "OXO" obliterator in greenish-blue. Reverse with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" datestamp in red (May 25) which used in Constantinople, Turkey, London cds (June 7) and 'Tunbridge Wells' arrival cds of the same day in green. An extremely rare combination usage and a most attractive cover. The existing pendant cover from the "Miss Sleigh" correspondence with the 2d neighbour stamp lettered QL was posted four days earlier on 21 May 1855. The imperforate 2d blue is very rare used during the Crimean War. SG Z16 = £2000 for a stamp off cover. Cert Karl-Albert Louis BPP (2022) Provenance: Seymour, Glassco and Christies 13 March 1990 lot 1951.(Image 1) (Image 2)

40461   image1855 large part entire (side-flaps removed and short flap reduced) to Leeds endorsed "Army Letter" and "Via Marseilles" most unusually franked for the quadruple rate by two cut-to-shape 6d Embossed, both tied by mainly very fine blue "O*O" barred ovals matching the very fine blue "POST OFFICE/A/BRITISH ARMY JU 11 1855" double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse. The O*O cancel is rare in blue and Embossed Issue covers are very unusual from the Crimea. The part contents includes a graphic description of soldiers who had died of cholera while at sea (en route "from Balaklava to Stamboul") being thrown overboard, etc. Exceptional item of the Guerre de Crimée. A single 6d (SG Z 22) with this cancel off cover is priced in Stanley Gibbons at 1800 GBP = 3600 GBP for the two stamps (our estimate of the c.v on cover £7'200); cert. BPA (2013).(Image 1) (Image 2)
