1878 Stampless cover from Antofagasta to New York, a handsome cover with a neat strike of an ornate blue "Correo/Antofagasta/10c" octagonal handstamp; 10c paid the postage to Lima, Peru, receiving that city's transit on the reverse, a rare "Transatlantico" French maritime c.d.s., Oct 31, applied for transatlantic passage to England with London backstamp, then to the United States with "U.S. Charge/to/Collect" and "25 Cents" handstamps, Very Fine. A most interesting routing, illustrating the difficulty of getting mail out of Bolivia to various parts of the world; a very rare and handsome cover., Ex-Ortiz-Patino.
A few months after this cover was mailed, the city and province of Antofagasta, the governance of which had long been disputed between Bolivia and Chile, was turned over to Chile.(Image)
