The tradition of signing banknotes when traveling together on an aircraft as a keepsake to convey good luck (a 'Short Snorter') was started by Alaskan bush flyers in the 1920s and adopted during World War II by flight crews crossing the Atlantic. The term derives from pilots jokingly calling each other 'short snorter', that is a person who imbibes alcohol in small measures, any more not being conducive to a safe landing.
