1899 (Dec) stampless cover from Private WC Mills of the First Contingent to the Boer War, to his mother in Broken Hill endorsed "On Active Service/No stamps procurable" & countersigned "HG Moor/Captn the" over the very rare 'WEST AUSTRALIAN/CONTINGENT' handstamp in violet, South African 'T' & '1D' handstamps signifying postage due of the 1d deficiency only but on arrival the fee was doubled & a NSW Jubilee 2d affixed in lieu of Postage Dues & tied by the scarce oval 'BROKEN HILL/11JA00/NSW' datestamp in violet, minor blemishes. A cracker! Ex Bill Hart (1993) and Dr Cecil Walkley: sold at our auction of 27.11.2010 for $3960 (Sale 159 Lot 306). Pte Mills was a "t'othersider" - from the Eastern States - who enlisted in Western Australia: see Haynes & Pope at pages 50-51, where this cover is illustrated.
The cachet is the earliest recorded Australian type used anywhere overseas, pre-dating the cachet used by the NSW Naval Contingent during the Boxer Rebellion in China. Haynes & Pope state at pages 33-34 that it was used between 15.12 & 30.12.1899 while in camp at Enslin and that only 4 examples have been recorded. The WA Contingent arrived at Cape Town 26.11.1899 & was quickly amalgamated into the Australian Regiment, which would explain why use of the cachet is unknown beyond 1899. (Image1)
