Albany: 'POST OFFICE/[crown]/ALBANY/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' double-ring undated handstamp largely very fine strike in dull red alongside 1854 Recess 1d black SG 1 pair (margins good to touching; both with surface faults) tied by two light but discernible strikes of Numbered Grid '14' in the same ink, on envelope to "Mrs Bussell, Cattle Chosen, Busselton", no arrival markings. Not listed in the Pope & Reynolds Census of Numeral covers. The heritage-listed homestead 'Cattle Chosen' was the first residential building in the Bussellton district, built by John & Alfred Bussell -.4.1832. Presentable notwithstanding the faults, and rare: Cecil Walkely's very fine 1856 cover with 1d black x2 & 4d blue to South Australia - the Albany handstamp perhaps not quite as fine as here - sold at our auction of 27.11.2010 for $7762 (Sale 159 Lot 86).
