Zeppelin World Trip Photo Journal [147109] A photo journal (with original cover-some heavy wear) of the Zeppelin world flights from 1929-33 produced by Germany 1-6-33. It is entirely in German. Overall condition is excellent, especially considering the age. There is a picture of Herman Goring and appears signed. Trips to the Artic, Switzerland, Norland, Holland, Spain, Germany, South America, Rome. Each section has written info and documented with multiple B/W photo's. There are also eight loose photo : two of the forerunner to hot air balloons, one appears to have been taken in the US of a balloon IFO a hardware store, one of the Zeppelin w/Swastika's on the tail and other personal photo's. Pine Station Postmark R-10 [143486] Pine Station had an active post office from May 7, 1886, to February 14, 1888. In his search for Nevada Postmarks, Gamett has rated this a "10" meaning there are fewer than three found. This was the later of the two he listed. It is a bold octagon strike with date. It has a fancy target chain cancel. Sent to Booth & Company in Sacramento. Booth and Company (Newton Booth was an entrepreneur and United States Senator) was a large grocery outlet. Has a receiving back stamp. Center discoloration. Very fine! History of Pine Station as a stop on the Eureka and Palisade Railroad included. City:Eureka Co. Manuscript Postmark, Dun Glen- Only One Known! [130897] This is the only known manuscript postmark and earliest Dun Glen postmark found by Gamett & Nelson. 1866. Manuscript parallel line cancel. Sent to New York. Has original enclosure. From a mining superintendent that is arriving to take over a mine. "... can fill the office of superintendent and financial agent both, there is no necessity of two parties being employed at great expense when one like him can fill both." "We will be ruined if a little money is not sent in a few days..." Very fine and choice early Nevada postmark! Dun Glen was among the earliest settled places in Humboldt County and scene of the 1865 and 1867 Native American uprisings. Second earliest Camp McDermitt Postmark; Includes Letter [130889] 1871. Rarity-10. Middle of postmark is struck but right and left are not struck. OFFICIAL BUSINESS has been crossed out. Manuscript cancel. Short history of Camp McDermitt. The letter is not in English, but one can decipher mention of Willistan Battery. Sent from hospital steward Frances Dressler. The hospital steward's description and responsibilities are found in The Hospital Steward's Manual (1862). The steward was chosen from the ranks or from outside the unit in civilian life. He had to be age 18 to 35 and was appointed to that title by the Secretary of War. He was given the rank just above first sergeant. ?Hospital stewards answered to the surgeon-in-charge. Once appointed, they stayed in that position for the duration of their enlistment terms. The Manual states that the hospital steward "must have sufficient practical knowledge of pharmacy to enable him to take exclusive charge of the dispensary acquainted with such points of minor surgery as the application of bandages and dressings. Francis Tresselt first appears in the official records on July 1, 1871 when he is made a "hospital steward" and assigned to the Department of California. He was given this position as a civilian. On August 18, 1871 he reports to Camp McDermitt under the command of Colonel Wagner of the 2nd Artillery. He would be reassigned to Camp Grant in Arizona on April 8, 1872. Manuscript North's Ranch Postmark with letter on cc cover [130891] Rarity-9. 1891. Second Earliest. History of the name from Haas (Reno Evening Gazette referred to it as Haasville) to North's Ranch. Addressed to Minnie Haas. Has a GH Shallenberger corner advertising with a GN Hallenberger letterhead. From PVS (Philander P Sanders). Extensive research has been done to prove this name. Extensive detective work put together this story. Sanders was a worker on the Haas Ranch and eventually ended up marrying the daughter.
