The letter signed "John Anderson" to his wife includes "... I am about leaving ... tired of this Place and of the Proceedings [?] in it ...". Carried by the 'Golden Age' departing Melbourne 5.5.1854 via Tahiti to Panama City arriving 19.6.1854; by mule & canoe across the isthmus to Aspinwall (later Colon), then per US Mail Steamship Co to New York. This voyage was the only trans-Pacific contract mail service before 1866. The ship carried US$200,000 worth of gold dust, but consumed so much coal that the costs were ruinous, and the experiment was not repeated. Adams & Co was an American firm that had overseas branches including in Melbourne; the 'Eastern State' was an Adams & Co ship and presumably carried both the letter and the employee, departing New York 3.2.1855 arriving Melbourne 25.4.1855. 1901 QV Amended Designs without 'POSTAGE' V/Crown Watermark QV 6d emerald SG 380 block of 12 (6x2) from the upper-left corner of the sheet, two upper units [Pos R1/4-5] with Cracked Electro from Queen's Hair through Right Value Tablet extending into the next unit from Left Value Tablet through Queen's Face to Right Frame ACSC V5d(var), the upper margin slightly trimmed, the lower-right two units with a small perf reinforcement otherwise unmounted, Cat $255+ for one variety unit (see below) and eleven mounted singles (£168+ for mounted normal singles). A technically significant piece. RPSL Certificate (2024) states "horizontal scratch", which is incorrect: the flaw is not straight, curving to follow elements of the design, and is clearly a 'crack'. Not recorded by Geoff Kellow. The ACSC-listed variety "Horizontal Scratch above Right-Hand '6' into Hair" has not been plated and is based on seeing an example of the left-hand unit only. Both units together in this block provides clear evidence of a Cracked Electro, and plates the varieties. (Image1)
