1854 (Sept 27) buff envelope enclosing lengthy 6pp letter headed "Albany" [New York, USA] from his sister to "William F Christie, Melbourne, Australia" with added note at left "He is probably in Ballarat, where he can be notified", endorsed "Per Express Adams & Co" & 'Collect" on the face; plus 1855 (Jan 30) envelope enclosing lengthy 3pp letter headed "Horse Heads Chimney Co, State of New York" to the same addressee from his brother endorsed "By Express Adams & Co" commencing "Since the receipt of yours of Sept 30/54 asking for aid to come home we have written you a number of letters ..." and going on to give details of the employee the family is sending to Melbourne to meet & assist his brother "... he sails the day after tomorrow on the ship Eastern State", both with a few minor edge faults, the latter with a few aging marks. Adams & Co was an American firm that had overseas branches including in Melbourne; the 'Eastern State' was an Adams & Co ship and presumably carried both the letter and the employee, departing New York 3.2.1855 arriving Melbourne 25.4.1855. Rare inwards items to the Victorian Goldfields carried privately outside the mails. Ex John Barwis.

1854 (Nov 11) envelope to Leicestershire, England endorsed "Registered" with QV Woodblocks Imperforate 6d orange & Octagonal Imperforate 1/- blue (both with almost full margins, the latter with some surface faults) tied by slightly untidy Barred Oval '94' cancels (rated R) and fair 'AVOCA/VICTORIA' crowned-oval despatch datestamp at lower-left, Melbourne transit backstamp where taxed "1/-" in red pencil on the face for under-payment of the 1/- ship letter rate, London '12FE12/1855' transit alongside where rated "1/6d"[d] payable by addressee, minor closed tears on the back flap & some transmission marks. Carried by P&O steamers 'Norna' to Galle, Ceylon, 'Bombay' to Suez, overland to Alexandria and 'Tagus' to Southampton. On 1.10.1854, the 6d per ½oz Uniform ship letter 'paid to destination' rate was introduced between Great Britain and the Australian Colonies. However, Victoria had increased its outgoing ship letter rate from 3d to 1/- on 1.5.1854, and did not initially participate in the uniform rate. Great Britain introduced retaliatory rates, and the British PO clerks seem to have treated this item as wholly unpaid, charging the addressee 6d Uniform ship letter plus 1/- registration fee. The rate was 1/10½d for ½oz or 3/9d for 1oz via Marseilles, but Ben Palmer gives 3/2d for the ½oz registered rate (p67), so apparently this item was intended to be sent registered (note that only 10½d credit for a ½oz letter was claimed by Great Britain). Carried by P&O steamers 'Salsette' to Suez, overland to Alexandria and 'Panther' to Marseilles arriving 3.4.1860, and onwards by train to the Royal Danish Postal Agency in Hamburg, Germany. Ex John Barwis.
Wyck is the main town on the North Frisian island of Fohr, located off the coast near Dagebull. The province of Schleswig-Holstein including the island of Fohr was annexed in 1867 by Prussia after the Second Schleswig War and the subsequent Austro-Prussian War, and remains part of Germany. Not listed in Ben Palmer's Census and believed to be the only known cover from Victoria to the Danish Frisian Islands. It is likely to be the the only such cover from any of the Australian Colonies.
