1856 (Aug 26) large-part outer to "SW McGowan/Superintendent of Electric Telegraphs" with Campbell & Fergusson 1d (cut-into) & 3d tied by BN '3' of Castlemaine (oval backstamp), a couple of filing folds. Ex Charles Lathrop Pack and Hugh Freeman: sold at our auction of 23.9.2011 for $490 (Sale 168 Lot 802); also an 1858 outer to McGowan with Emblems Rouletted 2d. Samuel Walker McGowan arrived from America in 1853 intent on establishing a private telegraph service. However, he was persuaded not to compete with the government, and accepted the position of Superintendent, gazetted 3.3.1854.

1857 (Jan 7) envelope to USA with Woodblock 6d orange (margins close to touching) tied by Barred Numeral '1' of Melbourne (oval backstamp), very fine 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/AP 12/57/PACKET' cds and '1d' handstamp for credit due to Great Britain both in red on the face, onwards by Trans-Atantic steamer with light New York 'MAY / 1' arrival cds on the face along with very fine '19/CENTS' handstamp for credit due to Great Britain and '24' handstamp for postage due from recipient, some light aging marks. Scarce combination of accountancy markings, which is not recorded in Ben Palmer's Census. (Image1)

1860 (Sep 4) cover endorsed "Registered" in red & with the sender's name on the reverse as required by the Regulations, to Switzerland with Perf 12 1/- pair tied by BN '239' of 'DUNOLLY' (b/s), 'REGISTERED/ MELBOURNE' transit cds on the face, London oval arrival of '19NO60' & very fine '[crown]/REGISTERED' & 'PD'-in-circle handstamp, French 'ANGL/AMB CALAIS' of the same date, the reverse with Swiss cds of Basel & boxed rate-calculator handstamp and 'BIRONICO' arrival, minor blemishes. A dramatic cover. Ex Ronnie Winchester: sold at our auction of 1.12.2019 (Sale 239 Lot 2116) for $767. Ben Palmer's Census Switzerland #126. Palmer at page 167 notes that the rate is "wrong", the minimum to Switzerland being 2/6d. However, despite this suggestion that there are stamps missing, there is no evidence of other stamps having been affixed and removed or fallen-off. And it begs the question, why wasn't the cover taxed? RPSV Certificate (2008) notes the rate irregularity but states "no stamps have been removed". (Image1)

1860-83 covers from Britain mostly at 6d rate including two double-rates, also 8d x2 (one with 8d orange), 9d x2 & 10d x2 (one with 10d red-brown), a couple to other Colonies (one with 'KULPARA/SA' backstamp; rated RRR), good range of GB numerals & duplexes, also United States to NSW with 1869 Pictorials 10c (fault at top), very mixed condition & all removed from a ghastly photo album but most are presentable & a few are fine.

1867 (Jan 28) 'The Australian News' with 'Trade & Commerce' banner & '.../The New Members of the Ministry' below (both unattributed), hand-addressed to Wiltshire "via Marseilles" per RMS 'Avoca' with Laureates 2d grey-violet tied by an irregular usage of the Barred Oval '1/V' of Melbourne, fine but partly-obscured strike of the boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/VIA MARSEILLES' h/s (the only example we have seen on a non-standard article), removed from a bound volume & remarkably fine. An important & unusual rates item: Ben Palmer at page 264, notes that the standard newspaper rate via the Long Sea Route was 1d. He gives no rate via Marseilles but does quote an 1866 rate of 2d via Trieste. (Image1)

1876 (May 16) triple-rate mourning cover to "Kingstown/Ireland" with scarce franking of Bell 9d lilac-brown/pink Perf 12 SG 185 three very fine singles tied by Melbourne duplex, 'KINGSTOWN/JY4/76' arrival backstamp, minor faults. Ex Guy Linfield and Hugh Freeman: sold at our auction of 23.9.2011 for $529 (Sale 168 Lot 775). Geoff Kellow at page 190 states "Covers are especially rare since the 9d Brindisi rate lasted only another 8 months." On 1.7.1876, the rate was reduced to 8d, the need for a 9d denomination ceased, and the balance of the printing was revalued. [The illustration is above Lot 1338]. (Image1)

1893 (Aug 8) cover with embossed 'BUCKLEY & NUNN/MELBOURNE' on the tucked-in flap, intended to be sent at the 1d Printed Matter rate to Naracoorte (South Australia) but unstamped, the inter-colonial address overlooked at the GPO where a largely very fine strike of the rare 'DETAINED FOR/1 PENNY POSTAGE' handstamp applied and initialled, 21mm 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE' backstamp of the same day in magenta. The Printed Matter rate was ½d within Victoria and 1d to the other colonies. (Image1)

Remaindered collection with Half-Lengths 1d x12, 2d x11 including a pair (one on-piece with superb '2' handstamp) & 3d x18 some of them very fine &/or attractive, Queen-on-Throne Lithos x21, useful group of Emblems & Beaded Ovals, eight pages of Laureates with a few better stamps including 6d mint & 8d orange, a good range of later issues mint to 5/- & used to KEVII £1 including 2/- apple-green SG 304 pair (very scarce used and a rare multiple that should be worth $500+; Parcel Post cancel), Large Stamp Duty postally used to 5/- rosine plus CTO 2/6d 6/- 10/- green x2 £1 & £10, Postage Dues to 5/- x2 (one CTO), etc, also Revenues Stamp Statute to £1 x2, Large Stamp Duty to £10 including 35/- & 45/- and 1886-96 £5 £6 & £8, condition variable especially in the early issues otherwise generally fine to very fine.
