Cat No: 537(var)
(537(var)) 3c Dark Violet Shade, OG, NH, incredible deep dark color, this shade is not listed in Scott as are the other three listed shades - but it certainly should be, it is significantly darker than even the darker shades of violet that exist on this issue, we have seen perhaps four to five examples with this shade, this is the only one we are aware of that has a certificate, it is certainly much more rare than the Deep Red Violet shade which Scott lists at $2,250 NH, hopefully the editors at Scott will take notice of this variety and get this shade listed in future editions of the Specialized Catalog, we believe this is the first time this shade, with certificate has ever been offered at public auction.

(537a) 3c Deep Red Violet, T. Pl. #F9413 Block of Six, OG, NH, incredible deep dark color and rich impression, full wide top selvedge, usual SH's, there are maybe four plate blocks known - two of which are listed here, this is the only top plate block known, incredible centering with four of the stamps in this block considered Very Fine or better, fresh and certainly the most impressive item in the Victory collection, a wonderful showpiece, it should be noted the catalog value listed is for Fine centering.
(537a) 3c Deep Red Violet, L. Pl. #9414 Block of Six, OG, H, most are LH, deep dark color, full side selvedge, incredibly well centered with every stamp being Very Fine or better, all six stamps in this block would grade at 90 or 95, there are only two recorded which are graded at 90 and Scott puts the value for a 90 hinged at $3,000 making the breakup value significantly higher than the catalog value for a plate block listed here, a most impressive multiple.

(537b) 3c Light Reddish Violet, OG, NH, nice strong light shade, four full and very well balanced margins all around, quite fresh and Extremely Fine Gem, this stamp is the only known example graded at this level and in addition it is the "Top Pop", since this stamp has been in the Victory collection for many years we wonder how Scott came up with the listed catalog value, it is certainly worth much, much more.
