1844 large-part entire letter to Philadelphia with American Letter Mail Co No Value Indicated Eagle stamp Scott 5L2 horizontal pair with good to large margins and complete outer framelines (4mm scissor-cut between the impressions at the the top) tied at right by one of two ink-strokes, largely fine 'FORWARDED BY/AMERICAN MAIL/CO/NOV 15/1844/No 102 Chestnut St/PHILADA' (the 'D' looks like a 'B') cds in red, two vertical filing folds clear of the stamps, a previous owner's 'Uncle Sam' handstamp in red on the reverse, Scott Cat US$1200 for a pair tied to cover by a manuscript cancel. 1865 (Oct 8) envelope from Indiana with Franklin 1c blue, Washington 10c green vertical pair & Washington 24c grey tied by concentric rings cancels and largely fine 'ROSSVILLE/IND' double-ring cds at upper-right, fair 'NEW YORK AM PKT/OC/14PAID' [= American Packet] transit cds in red on the face where '24'[c] accountancy mark applied also in red for credit to Great Britain and 'LONDON/PAID' alongside, Sandhurst 'JA 18/66' transit and largely very fine 'KANGAROO FLAT/JA19/66/VICTORIA' arrival backstamp, professionally restored. Ex John Barwis. The rate was 45c for a ship letter over ½oz up to 1oz via Marseilles. Per Inman Line 'City of Washington' departing New York 14.10.1865 arriving Liverpool 25.10.1865 and onwards by P&O 'Tanjore' to Alexandria, Egypt, overland to Suez then by 'Bengal' to Galle, and 'Bombay' arriving Melbourne 17.1.1866.
