1863 lengthy stampless entire in French headed "New York 16 Juin 1863 and signed "A Iselin et Cie", to France "p Persia" and improperly endorsed "Printed Circular", very fine '3 ETATS-UNIS 3/29/JUIN/63/SERV BRIT CALAIS' cds in red, Lyon arrival backstamp of 30/JUIN and with '15c' (decimes) handstamp (unusually with the 'c') in red. 'Persia' departed New York 16.6.1863. Built in 1856, it was Cunard's first iron-hulled paddle-steamer. On an early voyage, it set record times in both directions.
With translation of the contents including "...The invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania by the Confederate Armies, the news of which has reached us this morning, will probably stop trading entirely..." But then follows a glowing report of a booming stock exchange and "...Gold has been almost entirely neglected by speculators..." [Plus stampless entires 1847 NY-Edinburgh per 'Arcadia' with '1/-' handstamp, & 1860 London-NY per "Africa Via Queentown" rated "38" with very fine '48' handstamp]

'EXAMINED AND PASSED' cachet in blue on the reverse, part-German censor label, minor toning on the reverse. Chattanooga is in southern Tennessee but Chattanooga Valley is just over the border in Georgia. However, Camp Oglethorpe was south-east of Atlanta, near Macon. 1940 (Feb 1) commercial airmail cover to "Vanikoro Santa Cruz Group/British Solomon Islands" paid 80c by New York meter cancels, missent trans-Atlantic with Spanish '.../19FEB40/SEVILLA' arrival backstamp, large 'CENSURA MILITAR/[arms]/BARCELONA' cachet on both sides & boxed 'PENDIENTE DE CENSURA/A/CENSURAR EN DESTINO' (= pending censorship: to be censored at destination) cachet on the face, returned then trans-America & trans-Pacific with Hong Kong arrival backstamp of 7AP/40 & Censor '9' cachet in violet, then per BOAC feeder service to Singapore & QANTAS to Sydney where censored, finally by sea to destination, repaired on the reverse from being opened roughly & multiple creases ironed-out.
