Jun 3 circular datestamp with manuscript railroad mail endorsement (John Denniston, agent at this date) on folded letter from Albany, New York to J. Clapp, Esq., P.M., Norwich, Chenango County, New York. Originating on the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad, carried by rail to Utica where it entered the regular mails. Docketing indicates carriage from P. B. Rindle, court clerk in Albany, to the postmaster at Norwich.

1764 Stampless Folded Letter to Philadelphia via Boston, Manuscript "BOS" and "7 dwt" Adjusted for Inflation
Folded letter datelined “Charles Town Augst 4th 1764”, addressed to Edward Shippen Junr. Esqr. in Philadelphia. carried to the Boston post office where manuscript “Bos” and “7 dwt” (pennyweight) were added at upper left. Under the British Act of 1710, the Boston to Philadelphia rate of 1 shilling 9 pence was calculated as 21 pence, or 1/9 of a shilling. In Philadelphia, the 21 pence was multiplied by the inflation factor of 1.67, resulting in 35 pence, with the Philadelphia carrier fee of 2 pence added, for a total due of “3/1” from the addressee. Soiling and breaks along cover.

1783 Stampless Folded Letter from Havana to Spanish New Orleans Very Fine and Rare Ship Letter into 18th Century Spanish New Orleans
Folded letter datelined “Havana January 28th 1783” from Thomas McIntire to John Macarty, merchant, New Orleans, with manuscript directive “favord by Capt. Lawrence.” Carried by private ship into Spanish New Orleans with receipt docketing dated Feb. 11 (1783) and marked “answered” Aug. 23.
The letter with interesting contemporary content discussing the British blockade of American ports during the Revolutionary War and the slave trade, including:
“The embargo is at length taken off to the great joy of many… I have for some time past had some intension of going in a Deanish Vessel from this to St. Thomas to purchase Negroes… I therefore have concluded to proceed to the Continent as was first proposed in a Ship of twenty guns belonging to the States…”
This is rare and important private ship letter into 18th-century Spanish New Orleans. (Image)
