image Utuado, Pto.-Rico, 27 Set. 98. Unusually clear strike of double-circle datestamp on cover piece bearing U.S. 1¢ green (279) and 2¢ rose carmine (279Bc) to Aguadilla; some toning, few worm holes, Fine and rare piece.
Estimate; $75 - 100.

This use of the Spanish datestamp was 18 days after the military station at Utuado had opened indicating a lack of canceling devices. The postage paid indicates non-first class mail. Utuado was occupied by American forces on 8 August 1898. The military post office opened on 9 September 1898. Aguadilla was occupied on 19 September 1898. Its military post office opened on 1 October 1898.
