TRINIDAD: 1896-1906 Britannia Crown CA Watermark 5/- green & brown SG 122 with small sans-serif 'SPECIMEN' handstamp (11 x 1½ mm; Samuel Type D9a) in black, very lightly mounted with a little light even gum aging. Gibbons do not list non-UPU specimens. Marcus Samuel in 'Specimen Stamps of the Crown Colonies' (1976) states at pages 41-42 that Type 9 "has always been rather a mystery ... [Type D9a] ... covers a small group of overprints of similar appearance but of different dimensions to Type D9. Some are rubber handstamps on booklet panes and other unique items in the De La Rue collection" [our emphasis]. This handstamp is indeed similar (identical?) to those shown on Trindad 'FEE' overprints at page 8478 of 'The De La Rue Collection' edited by Frank Walton. See also the next lot. (Image1)
