image Banstead. 1840-46 Entire letters (3), an entire and cover comprising 1840 letter prepaid 1d in cash backstamped "+ / BANSTEAD / PAID" (SY 52), 1840 letter with a 1d stamp removed backstamped "+ / BANSTEAD" and an 1841 entire franked 1d backstamped "BANSTEAD", also 1843-46 letter and cover with red undated circle handstamps. The three straight line handstamps clearly locally made by the same individual, the Paid and unpaid handstamps with a cross above very similar but with differences to the lettering, the 1841 straight line handstamp apparently the previous "+ / BANSTEAD" handstamp with the cross removed. A remarkable and exceptionally rare group, the Paid handstamp probably the example recorded in the County Catalogue, the other two handstamps both unlisted and previously unrecorded, all three possibly unique. The wrapper was again turned and reposted to the original addressee in London prepaid 1d in cash, handstamped straight line "BLETCHINGLEY" and "PAID" (SY 68, only recorded in 1840) with a Godstone (July 7) backstamp, a red Paid arrival datestamp tying the original 1d black. Freeling Esq., General Post Office", complaining about the Reigate Postmaster - "I thank you about your advice about pouches for my letters but the Postmaster at Ryegate refuses to comply ... I told him it was your suggestion & that I would give him a Guinea at Xmas for his troubles .... I think him unreasonable as I understand he gets £30 per annum from the General Post Office, he makes £20 a year by the Penny for each letter & £2 a year for the Merstham bag making £52 a year besides other charges - for instance he charged me two pence for one letter put in at Ryegate, I collected this letter which had never been out of his house .... he says the two pence was for responsibility. I told the Postmaster at Merstham I would give him a Guinea every Xmas and he seems extremely desirous to serve the public, it is a pity Merstham is not a regular Post Office". Also a free front signed by St. Albans. (2).

image 1666-68 Entire letters from Dublin to "John Morris at his house in Augustine Friars over against ye Dutch Church, London" with Bishop Marks applied upon arrival in London, charged 4d or 1/-. The 1666 (Oct 8) letter with a Bishop Mark of "OC/19", a rare early use after the Great Fire of London of Sept. 3/4; the Bishop Marks were destroyed during the fire and were not replaced for several weeks.
