1896 (Aug) Dongola Campaign officer's cover to London with 'WADI-HALFA/ CAMP /...' cds & doubled 'T'-in-box handstamp, Cairo transit & 'LONDON/30SP/96' backstamps, superb strike of '2½D/F.B.' handstamp, part of the flap missing & the two panels separated & rejoined. With two 4pp 8vo letters - one headed "Dulgo 13th Aug 96" - & signed "FG Anley" or "Gore Anley" [Captain (later Major-General) Frederick Gore Anley] who states this will be his "last letter before we reach Dongola...For the next 3 weeks I expect we will be marching & fighting without rest every day...I always think men do better if they know exactly what they are required to do...". He speaks of harsh weather causing 1500 men being helped on baggage camels & that 12 died. "We really have not enough transport...the country is so frightfully mountainous that the camels have to go single file...no newspaper correspondents have been allowed...one or two chaps have been allowed to write letters to the papers..." Dulgo was a small military post on the railway line from Egypt. It had no post office.

Tonj (1) PO 26.4.1905 when Runner Mail service extended from Meshra-el-Rek; closed circa 1923. Meridi, in the far south, 250km SSE of Tonj, near the Belgian Congo border, had no post office. The cover took 26 days to reach Tonj, and another 39 days to reach Khartoum. Most of the 140km between Tonj & Meshra-el-Rek is swampland. (Image1)

1940 Italian Internees in Sudan four covers from different senders all to Italy with 2pi tied by 'KHARTOUM' cds of Nov or Dec 1940, two with 'Poste d'Internés de Guerre' handstamp & different 'FRANC DE PORT' cachets all in violet, those also with Sudan triangular censor & Egyptian oval censor, three with large Red Cross at Geneva cachet (one on the face), one with the flap missing otherwise all are very fine. Scarce quartet. By July 1941, some 79,000 Italian POWs were held in the Sudan. We could find no information about civilian internees, including why their mail wasn't free.
