1961 Tristan Relief Fund Surcharges on Tristan da Cunha 2½c+3d to 10c+1/- SG 172-175, generally well-centred, the 10c+1/- centred low and with just a hint of aging on the perf tips at upper-right, all are unmounted, Cat £8000. Each with 'B&K' [Bridger & Kay] guarantee handstamps on the reverse. A superb set sold at our auction of 6.8.2021 for $8850 (Sale 245 Lot 1128).
One of the key sets of the Elizabethan era: the stamps were withdrawn after only one month because the Colonial Office in London had not authorised their release. Only 434 complete sets had been sold. The majority of those were cancelled-to-order. This is a key set for collectors of St Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Marine Life/Fish and Disasters/Volcanoes: the eruption on 10.10.1961 of Tristan's volcano caused all inhabitants to be evacuated to England. They were allowed to return two years later. This is also a Dual Currency issue, the Tristan stamps being denominated in South African cents but surcharged in pence. (4) (Image1)
