OVERPRINTED THICK 'OS': 1876-85 QV Perkins Bacon Broad Star Wmk Perf 11½-12½ 6d Prussian blue as SG O25 but Imperforate, good even margins, very lightly cancelled. Unlisted by Gibbons. Absent from Gary Diffen's collection, and believed to be the only recorded example. Ex Don Pearce: sold for $898 (Sale 249 Lot 1458). It might be thought that perforations have been trimmed from all sides of this stamp. However, stamps with perforations clear of the design on all sides are extremely elusive and we consider the likelihood of perfs having been removed from this stamp to be extremely low. Superb. There are actually three impressions of the overprint, one complete, one 95% complete at the top, and a 50% strike at the base. The upper and lower impressions are from what was probably the initial overprint that was significantly misplaced. OVERPRINTED THIN 'OS' WIDE SETTING: 1891 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 2/6d pale violet and 5/- pink SG O86-87, each with a light horizontal bend at the base which is a characteristic of these stamps, the reverse with pencilled guarantees of "HRC" (= Harmer Rooke & Co) and Peter Holcombe, large-part gum, Cat £19,000. Separate Peter Holcombe Certificates (1986). The Gibbons listing is confusing: they are listed following the 1899-1901 issue, despite having been released in 1891, and the overprint is 21mm wide compared to 17mm for the 1899-1901 issue. The 2/6d is Ex 'Besancon' (III): sold for SFr3415 and the 5/- is Ex 'Besancon' (I) sold for SFr8470, a combined SFr11,885. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018) for the 2/6d. Only one sheet of 60 of each was issued. In our experience, and despite the relative Gibbons valuations, CTO examples are much scarcer than mint stamps. (2) (Image1)
