POSTAL CARDS - ESSAY: 1896 Post Office Design Competition entry by "Kangaroo" of a Wrapper ½d Coin design with very elaborate (and thus unsuitable) header incorporating numerous design elements including a train & a spear-toting Aborigine, expertly executed in reddish purple & Chinese white on thin card (315x246mm) with a number of marginal endorsements including "Prize divided" as well as "take out newspaper only", suggesting the design might have been considered for a Postal Card, for which it was clearly more suitable; plus an apparent voting sheet showing this as the most popular entry. 1876-1904 QV De La Rue Narrow Crown/SA Watermark 2d orange Perf 10 SG 168 block of 18 (6x3) with wing-margins at left & right and partial Sheet Number '...721' in black printed on the face of the lower-left unit, a couple of units in the top row with uneven/shortish perfs, a few minor aging marks on the reverse, some uneven gum with a few light bends & a diagonal crease affecting the two lower units in the right-hand column, minor perf reinforcing & hinge remainders but many units are unmounted, Cat £990+ for mounted singles. 1886-96 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' 5/- plate proof in carmine-pink on ungummed pink laid paper with the Value Printed Three Times in the Tablet horizontal pair Imperforate Vertically Between, the right-hand unit Perf 11½-12½ on three sides, the left-hand unit imperforate at sides, characteristic minor bends & a few uneven perfs. Almost certainly a trial by the printer, who had not previously used the keyplate process, to correctly align the duty plate. Ed Williams at page 8 states that "About ten copies are known to the writer, including one pair [possibly this item] and a strip of 3". A single imperforate on both sides sold at our auction of 14.8.2004 for $1415. Dr Don Pearce's single - imperforate at right - sold at our auction of 6.12.2023 for $552 (Sale 254 Lot 3241). (Image1)
