1900 (Feb 23) cover to "Pte John S Adlam/1st Life Guards/Modder River/Or elsewhere" with Cape of Good Hope 1d tied by 'OBSERVATORY ROAD' squared-circle, fancy-boxed 'BRIEVEN CENSUUR/Watervaal Krijgsgevangenis' (= Letter Censorship/Watervaal POW Camp) cachet in violet at upper-left, small peripheral tears & minor rust-marks at the top. With the enclosed letter headed "Valkenberg [Lunatic] Asylum/Mowbray/Cape Town" - the writer presumably worked there - that states "... I thought you had been shot or taken prisoner ... The relief of Kimberley the other day was grand work ... I expect Ladysmith will be relieved in a few days ... I am sending you ... a few stamps ...", four small sections excised by the censor who initialled the first page. Pte Adlam was with the Kimberley Relief Force but had been captured at the Battle of Modder River. Kimberley was relieved on 15.2.1900, & Ladysmith on 28.2.1900. A block of 6 1d stamps - apparently those included with the letter - is present.
