POSTMARKS: 'HMGY BELAMA/13JUL23/BRITISH SOLOMON IDS' two light but obvious strikes on KGV ½d & 1d on cover with oval 'BURNS PHILP SOUTH SEAS COY/ FAISI / LIMITED' imprint in blue on the flap, to Sydney. The 'Belama' was in service between 1911 & 1921, when it was wrecked on Santa Ysabel. It was replaced by the 'Ranadi', on which this cover was apparently posted. Faisi, near Shortland Island, was part of German New Guinea but was never developed by the Germans. In 1895, the island was sold to Nicholas Tindal, then mortgaged to Burns Philp, who took over in 1906. During WWII, Faisi was the first of the Solomons to be occupied by the Japanese.
