image POSTAL HISTORY: 1898 (May 22) envelope-front to Germany endorsed "Einschreiben" [Registered] with Germany Crown & Eagle 20pf blue and 50pf red-brown x2 tied by two fine largely complete strikes of 'BEZAHLT/Kaiserl. Deutsche Postagentur/Apia-22-5-1895' [Imperial German Postal Agency] boxed cancels in black, imperforate 'Apia' red & black/white R label alongside on the face, vertical fold not affecting the stamps or markings & minor edge faults. The foreign letter rate was 20pf per 15g x5 plus 20pf registration fee. Scarce Vorläufer [= forerunner] usage of German stamps prior to the issue of 'Samoa' Overprints in 1900 tied by a very scarce postmark (ArGe German Colonies Postmark Catalogue €650 on cover).
