POSTAL HISTORY: Large Gold Medal Five Frame Exhibit of 'Russian Mail via Austrian Galicia to General Postal Union 1875' mostly prestamp mail originating in Russia and carried by the four different trans-Galicia Routes to Western or Southern Europe, highlighting the often complex rate structures, the sometimes volatile political situation, the importance of border-exchange offices, and the impact of burgeoning communications especially the expansion of railway networks. Many items originated in the Crimes, also from Taganrog, Ukraine, Moscow, St Petersburg, Polish towns, etc. Destinations include Trieste, Hungary, the various Italian States, Spain, France and the German States notably Prussia. In general, the quality is fine to very fine but, as is characteristic of such material, filing folds, soiling and minor imperfections should be expected. Ex Ross Marshall, the exhibit has three times been awarded Large Gold at major American shows, including Reserve Grand Champion, and again at Royalpex 2017 (NZ). Please see our website for scans of the entire exhibit.
Galicia is an historical region north of the Carpathian Mountains, spanning parts of Poland and the Ukraine. The First Partition of Poland, in 1772, saw it annexed by Austria. The Third Partition in 1795 resulted in Russia & Austria having a common Galician border. The area subsequently devolved to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I, Galicia was controversially awarded to the newly-independent Poland, much to the chagrin of the ethnic Ukrainians.
