1862 (Apr 1; April Fools' Day) outer to Victoria with Clean-Cut Perf 6d SG 9 - exceptional centring - tied by partial Rays '87' cancel of 'IPSWICH' (superb b/s), fine Brisbane transit b/s & Melbourne arrival b/s of AP11/62 in red, minor blemishes. Ex Bernie Beston. [Stated to be the earliest recorded Queensland Chalon cover to Victoria]
1866 (Nov 20) cover to Somerset "via Marseilles" with rare franking of Litho 4d grey-lilac with Deteriorated 'FOUR' SG 56 (Cat £600 x3+ on cover) + 6d apple-green tied by light but clear Rays '87' of 'IPSWICH' (b/s), London transit of JA-11/67 & 'ILMINSTER' arrival b/s, repaired tear adjacent to but not affecting the 4d, & some soiling.
1870 (Feb 10) underpaid cover to London endorsed "Via Brisbane" with 2d blue single & pair tied by fine Rays '131' (rated RR on Chalons), largely very fine 'CABOOLTURE' cds alongside, superb Brisbane transit b/s & large-part boxed sans serif 'INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/VIA BRINDISI' h/s, light London arrival b/s of MY4/74, repaired opening tears including above the single stamp. [Caboolture is 52km almost due N of Brisbane, on the Sunshine Coast]
1870 (Nov 24) cover to India from Maryborough with Chalons 6d x2 tied light Rays '96' (poor cds b/s), to "Guard GIPR/Hurdah Station/E India", three different Indian TPO d/s (two tiny tri-sected ones, one on the reverse) & 'HERDAH/JA8/71' arrival cds in red on the face, minor defects. [Most mail to India in this period is to military officers. GIPR = Great India Peninsular Railway]
1871 (Oct 19) cover to "Post Office/Brisbane" with Chalons 2d tied by poor Rays cancel of 'TOOWOOMBA' (very fine cds without year slug alongside) & small Brisbane arrival b/s of OC20/1871, the same day endorsed "Unclaimed" with Type 3 'BRISBANE/ 1 /OC20/71/QUEENSLAND' cds alongside & forwarded to 'GYMPIE' (b/s of OC15/1871) with "2d" charged, again unclaimed & returned to Brisbane where very fine Type 1 'D-L-O' b/s applied & fine oval 'ADVERTISED/DE31/1871' datestamp on the face, minor aging.

1873 (June) cover to "Warumbull/Victoria" [sic] via North-South Outback Stock Route with exceptionally rare combination franking of Small Chalons 1d strip of 4 (a little oxidised) plus NSW DLR 2d all tied by Rays '134' of Thorgomindah, transit b/s of 'HOODSVILLE/NSW' (the earlier of only 2 recorded examples), 'WILCANNIA/NSW' & 'MELBOURNE' plus poor 'WARRNAMBOOL' arrival b/s, a few minor blemishes & pen-notations on the reverse. One of the great postal history covers of Queensland, being the only recorded Queensland/NSW combination cover; the most outstanding border-office cover; and an exceptional Outback usage.
To appreciate the sender's isolation, Thorgomindah (Thargomindah from 1881) is 1100km almost due west of Brisbane. Currawinga NSW on the Qld border PO 7.4.1870; renamed Hoodsville 1.8.1870; closed 15.6.1875. Re-opened as Hungerford NSW 1.1.1876; transferred to Qld 1.10.1880 & back to NSW 1.10.1881; finally back to Qld 24.2.1941 !; closed 1985. The cover travelled 130km almost due south Thorgomindah-Hoodsville; then SSW 350km to Wilcannia. The absence of further NSW transit cds is problematic, suggesting onwards carriage in a locked bag. We expect the route continued south-east through Ivanhoe to Hay, then due S to Deniliquin & into Victoria at Echuca, thence south to Melbourne & probably per coastal steamer to Warrnambool.
1874 (June 16) Chinese merchant's stampless cover to NSW with very fine 'MILLCHESTER' cds (rated RRRR; ERD), mss "2" & a smudged but identifiable strike of the very rare boxed 'POSTAGE PAID IN COIN' h/s in red, Townsville & Brisbane transit b/s. An attractive & famous cover. Ex Hugh Campbell - illustrated at page 109 - who recorded only this & 1890s examples from Queensport & Wompah. [Millchester is about 1300km NNW of Brisbane & 5km SE of Charters Towers. PO 5.3.1873; closed 22.1.1917, as a result of declining fortunes on the goldfields]
1875 (June 2) cover to Ohio "via San Francisco" with Chalons 6d yellow-green x2 tied by light 'QL' cancels of Brisbane (central cds), very fine 'PAID ALL' h/s with fleurons in red applied at Sydney (b/s) & 'SAN FRANCISCO/ AUG/3/PAID ALL' cds in red, clipped corner at L/R. Ex Bernie Beston. [Stated only one other Queensland cover - also of 1875 - with this Sydney marking is recorded. Such usage was not recorded by Hugh Campbell]
1875 (Oct 27) cover to London endorsed "Via Melbourne & Suez" with 6d yellow-green tied by largely fine Rays '103' (rated RRRR on Chalons) with partial '[ONE MIL]E CREEK' cds (RR) alongside, Brisbane transit b/s of OC29/75 & superb 'TOO LATE.' h/s at U/L, London arrival b/s of JA10/16, minor blemishes. PO 15.4.1868; renamed One Mile 1892. [One mile S of Gympie, on the Gympie Goldfield]
1876 (Feb 15) cover to "Rathmines/Dublin" with remarkable franking of Small Chalons 1d horizontal strip of 6 (the last unit damaged) & single plus 2d tied by Rays '120' of 'CAMBOOYA' (cds alongside), Brisbane & fine 'H & K PACT/ A /AP24/ 5 /1876' transit backstamps, minor blemishes. Ex 'Emerald' (David Feldman).
1882 cover to Paris endorsed "via Melbourne" with First Sidefaces 2d & 6d x2 tied by Brisbane duplex, Marseilles transit of 1/SEPT/82 on the face & a flurry of French b/s, redirected to England with superb 'CAMBRIDGE/SP4/82' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. [From 3.8.1876, there was a 1/1d rate via Italy. We expect the 1d overpayment was for a late fee]
1882 (Aug 9) OHMS cover from Brisbane to "The Auburn/Chinchilla" with First Sidefaces 4d pencil-cancelled, very fine underlined 'MISSENT' h/s at U/L - the only recorded example - alongside superb 'CHARLEVILLE' cds of AU13/82, forwarded via 'ROMA' & 'TPO S&W R/DOWN/ 4 AU17 4 /QL' (largely very fine b/s; no year slug), central fold & a few peripheral faults. [Chinchilla is 280km NW of Brisbane; Charleville is 740km WNW of Brisbane]
1883 (July 9) cover to Paris with First Sidefaces 1d (defective) & Second Sidefaces Lined Background 6d pair tied by BN '339' (rated RRR) of 'MACROSSAN BRIDGE' (cds alongside; RRRR; ERD), Townsville transit b/s & French 'MODANE A PARIS/3/SEPT/83' TPO transit cds on red on the face. PO 25.7.1882; renamed Burdekin 14.3.1899. [Macrossan Bridge was built in 1881 to carry the railway line to the Charters Towers goldfields. It is about 1200km NNW of Brisbane]
1884 (Apr 18) cover to Mississippi without route endorsement but correctly rated with First Sidefaces 4d & Second Sidefaces Lined Background 2d tied by BN '330' (rated R) of 'BOLLON' (fine cds alongside; RR - ERD) & 'PAID/ALL' h/s of Brisbane (b/s), 'SAN FRANCISCO CAL/PD ALL' b/s in red, minor soiling. PO 1.4.1881. [Bollon is 600km almost due W of Brisbane]

1890 (Apr 9) stampless Commercial Banking Co of Sydney cover to Sydney with light 'THARGOMINDAH' cds & the only recorded strike of the boxed 'POSTAGE PAID in COIN' h/s, 'BOURKE/NSW' transit b/s of AP20/1890, some light toning. [Thargomindah is 980km due W of Brisbane &, obviously, is "back o Bourke"! In 1898 it became one of the first towns in Australia to be powered by hydro-electricity]
1893 (Dec 17) cover (front only) endorsed "Card only" with 1d tied by 'TOOWOOMBA' cds, largely very fine 'CLOSED AGAINST/INSPECTION' h/s - stated to be the only recorded example - so taxed with light 'DEFICIENT POSTAGE ("1")/FINE ("1 - 2d") h/s, light soiling. Rare. [Greeting cards without written message were accepted as Printed Matter at 1d rate but had to be sent unsealed]
1895 (Jan 23) cover from GB with Jubilee 2½d bizarrely addressed to "Queensland/Natal/South Africa" with a flurry of Natal & CofGH backstamps, finally "Try Australia" but processed at Brisbane with large 'INSUFFICIENT ADDRESS' - unrecorded by Hugh Campbell - & 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/A/5AP95/ BRISBANE' b/s both in dull red, flapless & a bit travel-weary.
1909 (Sep 7) tinselled PPC to "Woodford via Caboolture" with 1d tied by very fine BN '215' & 'SOUTH BRISBANE' cds alongside, fine DLO cds & superb 'PROHIBITED' h/s both in an unusual red-violet ink, overall aging. Only a few examples from Queensland have been recorded.
